Classic Rock Cruises Appeal to Boomers

Guitarist for KISS Gene Simmons Performs, Classic Rock Cruises

Sail the seas with Kiss and other star bands on music-themed cruises.

Whether you’re a devotee of classic rhythm and blues or a metal-rock fan who grew up with the Kiss hit “Rock and Roll All Nite” as a personal anthem, there’s a cruise ship vacation for you.

Music-themed cruises are on the rise, giving vacationers a chance to hear live performances by their favorite bands, mingle with musicians and connect with fellow fans at sea. The website Best Classic Bands lists at least 20 such trips over the next year and a half.

If your tastes run toward classic R&B, for example, there’s the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise, which departs on a seven-day round-trip voyage from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to the Bahamas on Oct. 21. The cruise features performances by blues guitarist Buddy Guy, Booker T. Jones and the Stax Revue, the Taj Mahal and Keb’ Mo’ Band, and Elvin Bishop.

For metal-loving boomers, there’s the Kiss Kruise VII, a five-night trip that sets sail Nov. 5 from New Orleans and ventures to Costa Maya, Mexico, and back. It includes multiple performances by Kiss and other acts, in addition to “a photo with you, your cabinmates, and Kiss in makeup,” according to the cruise website.

Fans of 1950s and early ’60s oldies may be interested in the seven-day Malt Shop Memories cruise leaving Fort Lauderdale for the Caribbean on Nov. 5, featuring performances by Dion, Brenda Lee, the Righteous Brothers and Bobby Rydell.

Cruises planned for 2018 have themes including Southern rock, progressive rock and outlaw country music.

The Jan. 27 to Feb. 3 Soul Train Cruise features the Spinners, the Pointer Sisters and Eddie Levert of the O’Jays. There’s also the ’80s Cruise on March 17-24, which includes Rick Springfield, Loverboy, Berlin and Mike + the Mechanics to appeal to MTV-era enthusiasts.
