Silk & Snow Review: Is This Budget Hybrid Right for You?

Our team of experts put the company’s affordable hybrid mattress, available in three firmness levels, through a battery of tests to see if it’s worth your money

If you’re someone who prefers an eco-friendly mattress, a Silk & Snow bed might be worth considering. The company says it focuses on transparent, eco-conscious manufacturing and uses high-quality materials like Dunlop latex and Canadian steel. It sells three types of mattresses — memory foam, hybrid and organic — all of which are available in three different firmness levels (firm, medium firm and plush).

Our AARP Smart Picks lab team tested the medium-firm version of the affordably-priced Silk & Snow Hybrid to see how it ranks against other hybrids we’ve reviewed. We enlisted older adults to help us assess key characteristics, like how well the bed reduces pressure and supports the spine. We also consulted medical experts and held a focus group with adults ages 55-plus who recently bought a mattress to help inform our review.

Read on to learn more about the Silk & Snow Hybrid and how it stacks up against other hybrid mattresses we’ve tested. (We tested the queen-size model.)

What we like about the Silk & Snow Hybrid

The Silk & Snow Hybrid is one of the best-performing budget-friendly mattresses we’ve tested. Our lab team and older adult testers praised the bed’s construction, highlighting its bouncy, supportive coils and dense foam edges.

Affordably priced

The Silk & Snow Hybrid retails at around $975. About half of all respondents in our survey of older adults who recently bought a mattress budgeted between $500 and $1,500. Of these participants, 62.6 percent were “very satisfied” with how much they spent, and 33 percent said they “might spend” that much money again.

Testers told us the mattress was comfortable, provided solid pressure relief and spinal alignment for side sleepers, and delivered strong edge support. It could be a good option for couples in particular, since this hybrid bed (made with a combination of metal springs and memory foam) exhibited respectable motion isolation, which is the ability to dampen motion so partners aren’t awoken by movements.

The Silk & Snow Hybrid isn’t just a valuable choice for its performance. The company offers a generous 365-night free trial period. We typically don’t see such long trial periods from mattress companies with prices this low. For instance, in our review of the best mattresses for seniors, only three of the seven picks offer 365-night trial periods.

Silk & Snow offers a 15-year warranty. This warranty length is relatively short compared to limited lifetime and lifetime warranties from other companies we’ve tested, but it’s longer than a mattress’s average lifespan (seven to 10 years).

  • Best sleep positions: Side and back

Key takeaways from our testing

Solid pick for couples on a budget. The Silk & Snow Hybrid nabbed impressive scores in our ripple test, which measures motion isolation. In the test, our lab team monitors the movement of liquid in a beaker as a tester switches positions and gets in and out of the bed. Our lab testers noted there was little to no movement of the liquid when sitting at the edge of the mattress. They also found that vibrations were minimal when another person got in and out of the bed. These kinds of features could work well for couples, especially if one person is a light sleeper and could benefit from the dampened movement.

Very good support for back and side sleepers. The Silk & Snow Hybrid delivered favorable spinal alignment performance for back and side sleepers in our tests. The mattress’s materials contour to the body, filling in space between the lower back and the bed’s surface to help support and maintain a neutral spine. Donna described her body as feeling “light” and evenly distributed across the surface, which is also a testament to the bed’s decent pressure relief in both positions. “It feels comfortable. I’m nicely supported overall,” she said, reporting no shoulder or hip pain despite living with shoulder pain. However, Donna, who is average-weight, said the bed felt a little too firm for her to sleep on her stomach, giving it lackluster scores for pressure relief and spinal alignment in that position.

Midrange cooling ability. Some older adults may need better temperature regulation for undisturbed sleep than what the Silk & Snow Hybrid provides. To assess the bed’s cooling performance, our lab team used a cooling gun to measure the temperature difference before and after applying a heating pad to the mattress’s surface. It retained about 18 degrees of heat, which is average compared to other mattresses we’ve tested. These results mean the bed may not be the best fit for some hot sleepers.

How much does the Silk & Snow Hybrid cost?

Silk & Snow, as a company, is unique in that it charges different prices for different firmness levels. (Mattress companies usually charge one price per model regardless of firmness level.) The medium-firm version of the Silk & Snow Hybrid costs $975, which is about $985 less than the average cost of the mattresses we’ve tested. If you catch holiday sales, you may be able to purchase this mattress for up to around 30 percent off.

The firm version costs only $865. It has a layer of memory foam that’s one inch thinner than the plush firm, which is the most expensive of the three, at $1,185.

What materials are in the Silk & Snow Hybrid mattress?

All hybrids use layers of coils and memory foam, but the composition may differ from one mattress to another. The medium-firm Silk & Snow Hybrid has the following construction, in order from top to bottom:

  • A quilted foam layer topped with an antimicrobial cover
  • A two-inch high-density memory foam layer infused with cooling gel
  • An eight-inch pocketed coil layer with zoned support (firmer coils in the center for lumbar support)
  • A dense foam border to reinforce the edges

Silk & Snow’s CertiPUR-US-certified foams are made without harmful chemicals (like formaldehyde) or heavy metals. This certification also means the foams have low gas emissions from the manufacturing process, which can help protect indoor air quality.

How to set up a Silk & Snow Hybrid

Silk & Snow’s mattresses are shrink-wrapped and shipped in a large box to your door. Once the bed arrives, move the mattress to your bedroom, unbox it and let it decompress for 72 hours before sleeping on it. (The box that the Silk & Snow Hybrid comes in is large and heavy. You may need help moving it into your desired room.)

Some mattress companies offer in-home delivery and setup, also known as white-glove delivery. This service arranges for movers to carry the bed and set it up for you at an extra cost. However, Silk & Snow does not offer white-glove delivery at this time, so if you need help, you’ll need to arrange it on your own.

What are the benefits of a hybrid mattress?

Hybrid mattresses have a variety of advantages, says Dan Elliot, the occupational therapist in New York City. Their benefits include:

  • Responsive coils
  • Firm edge support
  • Good airflow
  • Top-notch bounce for easier movement

Joseph Hribick, a physical therapist and clinical assistant professor of physical therapy at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania, says hybrid mattresses also have an advantage for older adults with higher body weights because they offer more structural support than foam beds, helping to prevent sagging over time.

Our lab team found these descriptions consistent with our testing results for the Silk & Snow Hybrid. The bed’s medium-firm feel is bouncy and supportive in most positions, and the edges are reinforced with dense foam. Testers told us moving on the mattress is relatively simple because it doesn’t “suck you in” the way soft foam beds often do.

Silk & Snow Hybrid vs. other mattresses we’ve tested

Here’s how the Silk & Snow Hybrid compares to similar hybrids we’ve tested around the same price range. Check out our roundup of the best hybrid mattresses for more options at a variety of price points.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is a better-performing mattress that retails at about $1,465 for a queen. This bed scored 9.9 out of 10 overall —  0.3 points higher than the Silk & Snow Hybrid.

Our testers praised the mattress’s well-rounded pressure relief and spinal alignment, which earned higher scores in all tested sleep positions than the Silk & Snow Hybrid. This bed may be a good choice if you’re a combination sleeper who changes sleep position throughout the night, or if you and your partner find it difficult to agree on mattress qualities due to different sleep preferences. But if you choose the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid, you’ll have to sacrifice some motion isolation.

Brooklyn Bedding offers a shorter 120-night trial period, but it has a limited lifetime warranty, unlike Silk & Snow’s 15-year warranty. Neither Brooklyn Bedding nor Silk & Snow offer white-glove delivery.

Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight ($1,373 for a queen) scored 0.1 point lower than the Silk & Snow hybrid overall but outperformed in our spinal alignment assessments, garnering perfect scores in every tested sleeping position. It also aced our cooling gun test, making it one of the best cooling mattresses we’ve tested.

However, this bed lost points in its edge support, earning a subpar score during our tests where older adults rated how stable they felt lying or sitting on the edge.

Helix mattresses come with a shorter 120-night trial period, but they include a limited lifetime warranty with the option to add 10-year accidental coverage (as opposed to coverage for manufacturer defects only). Helix also offers white-glove delivery starting at $219, whereas Silk & Snow doesn’t offer the service at all.

DreamCloud Classic Hybrid

The DreamCloud Classic Hybrid is priced higher than other mattresses on this list at around $1,800 for a queen, but frequent discounts can bring the price down by up to 50 percent. Like Silk & Snow, you get a 365-night free trial period, but DreamCloud offers a lifetime warranty as opposed to Silk & Snow’s 15-year warranty.

FAQs

Is the Silk & Snow Hybrid mattress good for back pain?

The Silk & Snow Hybrid could be a good mattress for back pain. Hribick says the bed’s medium-firm support can be an ideal choice for older adults with nonspecific back pain, as it promotes spinal alignment. However, back pain can vary from person to person. Talk with your health care provider if you have questions so you can find the right mattress for you.

Where can you buy a Silk & Snow mattress?

You can purchase a Silk & Snow mattress on the company’s website. If you live in Canada, you can also find multiple stores across the country. Use the site’s store locator to find the location closest to you.

Can you flip a Silk & Snow Hybrid mattress?

Silk & Snow encourages sleepers to rotate the mattress every two to three months to even out wear on both sides. The company does not recommend flipping it, which it says could damage the materials.

This mattress scored 0.2 points higher in overall performance than the Silk & Snow Hybrid, beating its competitor in adjustable base compatibility. In our lab tests, the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid conformed exceptionally well to adjustments without fabric bunching or awkward gapping where the mattress lifts from the base.

This mattress’s pressure relief and spinal alignment perform similarly to the Silk & Snow Hybrid. It tested better for side and back sleepers, but didn’t perform as well for stomach sleepers. Both mattresses deliver impressive cooling, but the DreamCloud has slightly weaker edges. We think these beds are toe-to-toe competitors, but the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid may have the advantage if you use an adjustable base.

Read our best mattresses for side sleepers roundup to learn why the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid earned our pick for best value in that category.
