En español | From loan specialists to paralegals to customer service representatives, the Small Business Administration (SBA) is seeking thousands of temporary workers to help it evaluate property damage to homes and businesses in the wake of hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. SBA’s low-interest loans are a key financial resource for small businesses, private nonprofit organizations, homeowners and renters trying to recover from the devastation wrought by the hurricanes.
The assignments are for 30, 60 or 90 days through Dec. 31. About 2,000 people have already been hired, said Eric Reece Jones, deputy chief of staff for the SBA, but the agency needs many more short-term workers to meet demand.
The agency said the stints would appeal to older adults. “It’s perfect for someone who is recently retired” and is looking for some extra cash, Jones said. “This is a way to serve your country. I look at this as a great demographic.”
For example, the agency needs loan specialists for its processing centers in Buffalo, N.Y., Dallas, and Sacramento, Calif., to assess applicants’ creditworthiness and repayment ability. It also needs lawyers, paralegals and legal assistants in those cities to prepare and review legal and closing documents, as well as to validate deeds and collateral. Other jobs, such as damage verifiers, are needed nationwide. In some cases, training will be provided.
The SBA is looking for applicants for the following positions:
- damage verifiers
- lawyers, paralegals and legal assistants
- loan specialists
- program support assistants and call center specialists
- public information officers
- customer service representatives
- information technology specialists (customer support)
- construction analysts (loss verifiers)
- administrative support assistants
