According to a recent AARP survey Global Insights on Retaining Workers Ages 45-Plus, 52 percent of respondents want flexible hours and remote work. AARP Employer Pledge signer Supporting Strategies understood from the start that remote work is a key aspect to attracting and retaining experienced, qualified talent.

Since its inception in 2004, the accounting and bookkeeping service provider has offered work-from-home jobs while maintaining a level of personal connection with its customers, matching its clients with a financial expert in their community. A pledge signer since October 2022, Supporting Strategies has grown to more than 700 employees nationwide. Hiring experienced talent is not just a fad for Supporting Strategies; it’s the engine that drives their valued customer service, trust, and credibility.

The benefits that experienced, tenured talent can bring to the workplace

Supporting Strategies believes that experience unlocks new, creative solutions for their clientele. AARP Research shows that older professionals are 7 percent more engaged and 4 percent more motivated than their younger peers, which can have tangible benefits to overall workplace culture. A 2014 SHRM study found that for “companies that utilized mixed-age work teams, the relative productivity of both older and younger workers was higher than in companies that did not use mixed-age teams.”

Supporting Strategies recognizes that having older workers on their team can improve workplace relationships and dynamics, leading (but not limited) to:

  • A boost in morale, productivity, and engagement with younger colleagues;
  • Increased levels of professionalism;
  • An improved ability to handle a variety of complex and sensitive situations;
  • An increase in brand trust and credibility;
  • And better client relationships.

Helping a multigenerational workforce thrive

Supporting Strategies values both experience and tenure. All employees have a minimum of five years’ experience, and the company is a Certified Age Friendly Employer (CAFE).

Because it’s not enough to simply hire experienced talent, Supporting Strategies also provide their remote employees with opportunities for social connection, ergonomic support, and age-inclusive training pathways.

  • Social Connections: At Supporting Strategies, age-inclusivity isn’t just a policy but rather a strategic, continuous effort to create a workplace culture of psychological safety, collaboration and learning. Each quarter, the company hosts the Palooza, a group event that provides team members with tools, resources and strategies for success in their roles.
  • Ergonomic support: Age-friendly employers understand the importance of accessible equipment and IT training. As an employer committed to cultivating an age-inclusive workplace, Supporting Strategies offers ample training and continuous IT support. Even though all roles are remote, Supporting Strategies has full-time IT support on call. The company also offers dedicated Zoom channels that are specifically managed by experienced IT staff. The ergonomic support is also accessible to franchisors across the U.S.
  • Age-inclusive training: Lifelong learning is a cornerstone of Supporting Strategies’ culture. To make that professional development possible for their employees and franchisors, they launched Supporting Strategies University, an age-inclusive e-learning and platform. They also use mentoring and reverse-mentoring to cross-pollinate skill sets across age groups. For example, their longest-tenured employees mentor new hires on how to navigate Supporting Strategies’ systems and procedures.
