Scams and identity theft continue to affect communities across Texas, as scammers become increasingly sophisticated in their tactics. To help you protect yourself and your loved ones, AARP partners with various organizations each year to bring fraud-prevention education directly to you through Texas Shred ‘Em, a statewide fraud awareness, prevention, and action campaign focused on empowering Texans with knowledge and resources.
Throughout the campaign, AARP Texas will host free, in-person paper shredding events and scam prevention workshops, both virtual and in person, so you can safeguard your personal information and stay one step ahead of fraud. These events are designed to give you the tools and support needed to recognize, prevent, and respond to scams, including growing fraud schemes that involve cryptocurrency ATMs.
One of the simplest steps you can take to lower your risk of identity theft is to securely dispose of documents containing sensitive information like old tax documents, government correspondence, bills, or medical information. Texas Shred ‘Em provides residents of Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, El Paso, Houston, and San Antonio with free, in-person shredding events, offering you a safe, convenient way to protect your information.
All events are free and open to the public:

A growing threat is cryptocurrency kiosks, or “crypto ATMs,” now found in grocery stores, gas stations, bars, and other everyday locations. They look like bank ATMs but operate with little oversight and almost no fraud protections. Scammers often pressure victims to deposit cash into these machines, instantly transferring funds into criminals’ digital wallets.
Texas currently lacks strong consumer protections around these kiosks. Seventeen states have already taken action, and AARP Texas will fight for similar safeguards when lawmakers return next year.
