AARP Hearing Center
It’s officially Memorial Day weekend, when mattress companies offer some of their steepest discounts of the year. You’ve got only a few days left to take advantage of markdowns as high as 60 percent off retail prices. The best sales normally last until the Wednesday after Memorial Day (May 27). You may find some sales extend after Wednesday, but the next five days are generally your best bet for saving the most money.
Popular companies like Nectar, Saatva and Helix are offering Memorial Day deals from 20 to 60 percent off. In this crucial moment, when mattress and sleep accessories deals are at their peak, we’ve rounded up this year’s best sales.
Every bed we feature is based on our testing experience for AARP Smart Picks. To put mattresses through their paces, we performed lab tests and assembled a group of testers ages 45 and older to assess and rate beds for key performance metrics like support, pressure relief and motion isolation. (For more details on our process, see our mattress and sleep accessory testing methodology.)
We’ve also compiled the best discounts for mattress toppers, bed sheets, pillows and other essential sleep accessories that can help you get a better night's rest. You can see that list in the section on the best Memorial Day sales on mattress toppers and more.
You’ve only got a few days left before these Memorial Day sales disappear, so we recommend acting now. (All mattress models tested were queen size.)

Best Memory Foam Mattress: Nectar Premier Memory Foam
If you like the cradling feeling of dense memory foam — a type of bed made of layers of foam — the Nectar Premier Memory Foam might be a great fit. This bed is our top pick for the best memory foam mattress because of its strong performance on the key metrics memory foam is known for, such as motion isolation and cradling support. In fact, Donna, a 60-year-old tester and combination sleeper, gave this mattress near-perfect pressure relief scores across all tested sleeping positions.
For the company’s Memorial Day sale, you can save up to 50 percent on any mattress in Nectar’s collection — including this bed. That means the current sale price of the queen-size model of this bed is $949, down from the retail price of $2,249. Currently, you also can buy a discounted bedding bundle — up to 66 percent off — from this company, which includes a mattress protector, two cooling pillows and a sheet set. These bundles are usually $599, but you can snag one for $179 during this sale.
For more information, see our Nectar review.
Best Mattress for Back Pain: Saatva Classic
For people ages 50-plus who are looking for a mattress for back pain, the Saatva Classic may be a strong option. In addition to featuring a zoned support construction — which refers to firmer construction across the center-third of the mattress for added lumbar support — this hybrid bed is one of the few we’ve tested with a dual-coil design. Often, hybrid mattresses include only a single layer of coils, but this model has two layers. The bouncy innerspring layer on the bottom offers extra support, and the middle layer of individually wrapped coils contours to your body to help ease pressure. Fittingly, during our assessments, testers gave this bed top-level spinal support ratings in addition to near-perfect edge support scores.
For spring, Saatva is running a $300 off sale on orders of $1,000 or more when you buy a mattress. That discount drops the price of this bed from $2,199 to $1,899 for a queen.
For more information, see our Saatva review.
Best Mattress for Neck Pain: Helix Midnight Luxe
As a part of Memorial Day sales, Helix is offering an exclusive 27 percent off sitewide sale when you use the code AARP27. That deal drops the Helix Midnight Luxe from about $2,398 to around $1,751 for a queen — almost $647 in savings. Our testers rated this bed above average for pressure relief when lying on their sides and backs, and it earned a spot on our list of the best mattresses for hip pain. To this point, Allison, a 51-year-old tester and side sleeper, said she didn’t feel any pressure on her neck or hips when evaluating this mattress.
If this bed is slightly out of your budget, but you’re interested in shopping with this company, the Helix Midnight costs around $1,003 with this Memorial Day sale. That base model from the company is our overall pick for the best mattresses for neck pain. However, it has no pillow top and one less layer of memory foam when compared to the Helix Luxe.
For more information, see our Helix review.
Best Hybrid Mattress: DreamCloud Premier Hybrid
DreamCloud’s Memorial Day sale is one of the most generous we’ve seen, with up to 60 percent off mattresses — and a total of 66 percent off if you bundle an adjustable base and mattress. For instance, with this Memorial Day sale, you can snag the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid and an adjustable base for $1,398 when buying as a part of the adjustable base bundle. Our testers gave this mattress almost-perfect ratings or higher for spinal support and pressure relief across all tested sleeping positions. Couples also may appreciate this bed for its top-notch motion isolation performance.
In addition, sleep accessories bundles that include a mattress protector, sheet set and two cooling pillows are available at a discounted price of $159 if you buy a mattress. The sleep bundle usually retails for $599.
For more information, see our DreamCloud review.
Best Cooling Mattress: Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid
If you have trouble staying cool when you sleep — hello, hot flashes and general night sweats — you may want to consider the Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid. It’s one of the best beds we’ve ever tested when it comes to avoiding heat retention, and it earned a perfect score in our cooling test. The mattress is constructed to create a cooler sleeping experience, with Leesa noting that its cover is made of cooling fibers as well as four layers of foam to support cooling, bounce and cradling pressure relief. The company also offers this bed in three firmness levels so you can choose the best feel for you.
During the company’s Memorial Day sale, which applies to many of its beds, you can snag this mattress for $1,899 — 25 percent off the retail price of $2,399.
For more information, see our Leesa review.
Best Mattress for Back Arthritis: WinkBed
Another current promotion? WinkBeds is running a 30 percent off sale across its entire mattress collection. This sale brings the price of its flagship offering, the WinkBed, down from $2,570 to $1,799 for a queen. We tested the luxury firm model, which is classified by the company as medium firm (6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest). Our testers gave it an above-average rating for spinal support for back sleepers.
For more information, see our WinkBeds review.
Best Value Hybrid Mattress: Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid
Value seekers may love this sale, especially if they have a preference for hybrid mattresses. Brooklyn Bedding is offering a 25 percent off sale sitewide when you use the code SPRING25. Based on our testing, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid offers a solid balance of pressure relief and spinal alignment, which is why it’s one of our favorite value hybrid beds. For instance, tester Allison gave this bed perfect scores in all tested sleeping positions for both pressure relief and spinal alignment.
This bed usually retails for $1,465 for a queen, but with this sitewide discount, you can buy it for $1,098. It can be difficult to find a high-scoring hybrid mattress around $1,000, so it’s nice to see this sale on a bed that performed so well in our testing.
For more information, see our Brooklyn Bedding review.
Best Mattress for Edge Support: Silk & Snow
Adults ages 50 and older who are seeking sturdy but budget-friendly mattress may like the Silk & Snow Hybrid. This hybrid performed well in our lab’s tested metrics across the board, especially in edge support. This bed has some of the strongest edges of any bed we’ve tested and earned an above-average score in our edge support test.
The retail price of this bed is $975 for a queen, but the Memorial Day sale of up to 20 percent off sitewide means you can snag it for the sale price of $825. And if you buy this bed from Silk & Snow during the sale, you can score a free sleep bundle, which includes cotton sheets, a microfiber duvet, microfiber pillows and a mattress protector.
For more information, see our Silk & Snow Hybrid review.
Best Mattress for an Adjustable Base: Bear Elite Hybrid
The Bear Elite Hybrid conforms well to adjustable bases, and testers gave this bed a superb score for adjustable base compatibility. In fact, when we assessed this mattress on three different bases, we found that the mattress conformed well to the surface every single time. For instance, when we put the bed in different modes, such as those for TV or zero gravity, we saw no noticeable gapping or bunching. Why does this test result matter? A mattress that doesn’t conform well to an adjustable base can create gaps between the base and bed, which may increase your chances of falling out of bed.
This queen-sized mattress usually retails for $2,284, but with AARP’s exclusive 40 percent off sitewide sale, the price drops to around $1,370 when you use the code AARP40.
For more information, see our Bear mattress review.
Best Firm Mattress: Plank Firm
If you like an extra solid surface when you’re sleeping, you may want to check out the Plank Firm. This flippable mattress has two sleeping surfaces: one side that’s firm and the other side that’s extra firm. (Mattresses rated firm and extra firm range from 7 to 10 on the firmness scale, with 10 being the firmest.) We recommend it only for back and stomach sleepers seeking a truly supportive bed.
Does this sound like you? If so, check out Plank’s sitewide sale. It's 25 percent off discount drops the price of the Plank Firm to $999 — down from the retail price of $1,332 — when you use the code SPRING25.
For more information, see our Plank review.
Best Mattress for Side Sleepers: Nolah Evolution
Based on our testing, we’ve selected this bed as the best for side sleepers. And, thanks to holiday sales, you may be able to get it for less. The Nolah Evolution is a hybrid mattress with a pillow top that our testers found to be extremely plush, or soft. Testers said it offered adequate cushioning for their hips and shoulders, which are common pressure points for side sleepers. Karin, a 54-year-old tester and side sleeper, said her shoulders felt “really great” and that she didn’t feel any pressure in her hips. She gave this bed impressive pressure relief and spinal alignment scores for the side sleeping position.
Now, you can find this mattress priced at 30 percent off for its latest sale, dropping the price of a queen from $2,277 to $1,749. Use the code AARP50 for an additional $50 off the mattress price.
Best Mattress for People With Excess Weight: Titan Plus Luxe
Shoppers who weigh more than 250 pounds may appreciate this supportive mattress. The Titan Plus Luxe is designed for people who have a higher weight, and it features a strong coil base along with responsive foam layers. When Bryan, a 62-year-old tester who has a higher weight, evaluated this hybrid bed, he gave it a near-perfect pressure relief score and top-notch scores for spinal alignment across all tested sleeping positions.
Feeling intrigued? Currently, this bed is 25 percent off when you use the code SPRING25, which reduces the price of a queen from $1,599 to $1,199.
For more information, see our Titan review.
Best Organic Mattress: Birch Luxe Natural
A bed that offers a sustainable alternative to memory foam? You’ll find it in the Birch Luxe Natural. This mattress is made with natural wool from New Zealand, along with organic cotton and latex, making it a nice option for eco-conscious shoppers. Plus, it offers other pros. For instance, tester Bryan said this bed had a strong mix of movement-assisting bounce and stable edges. “It’s springy. I feel supported, like I’m not going to slide off the edge,” he said, giving this bed’s edge support a very good score.
