Closet Cleanup 2026: Items You Should Never Toss, Sell or Donate

Keep these essential clothing items for lasting style

(From left) When paring down your wardrobe, there are certain classic styles that are keepers. Don’t toss items like the Lands’ End Women’s Faux Leather Mid Rise Relaxed Straight Leg Cropped Pants in Black; Banana Republic Factory Women Vegan Leopard Pony Hair Skinny Belt; Banana Republic Factory Women Timeless Trench Coat in Maverick Tan; Gap Women Vegan Leather Bucket Tote Bag in Red Spice; Lane Bryant Lena Knit Wrap Midi Dress in Light Olive; and the Madewell Women The Stretch Flare Crop Jean in Osgoode Wash-Stretch.

Women think of items in their wardrobe as loyal friends. After all, these are the clothes and accessories that got them through breakups and divorce, weight gain and diets, job losses and promotions, beach vacations and stormy days, celebrations and life’s blah moments. In fact, most women keep these besties long after their bodies, tastes and trends have moved on. Letting go forever is not easy. As a beauty and style editor and a personal shopper for women over 50, I’m on the front lines of closet cleanups. Here’s my advice on the current keepers.

(From left) Unless faded or worn, black is always in style. Save basics like the Quince Women Mongolian Cashmere V Neck Sweater in Black; Gap Factory Women Oversized Linen-Blend Easy Shirt in Black; and Anne Klein’s Women’s Mid-Rise Pull-On Straight Pants in Anne Black.

1. Your best black basics

Black pants and tops are the fashion equivalent of a 911 rescue team. The inky-dark hue is their superpower, visually blanking out extra pounds, bloat, bulges and jiggles. But that’s not all black does. It makes inexpensive clothes look pricier and seasonal fabrics more versatile so you can easily mix and match the old and new, casual and dressy, stress-free. This makes black pieces, whether casual, sporty, dressy or tailored, the front-runners on what I’ll call your “keepers” list.

But be choosy. Check for fading or a dingy grayish or reddish hue on frequently worn and washed pieces; permanent stains from a drop of bleach or deodorant; pulls and pilling on sweaters; and styles that no longer flatter you. All make any black item a goner. Even adored black items that are now too tight, small, loose, short or baggy have gotta go. Check the ones below for good examples of what to save.

2. Still-great blazers and “lady” jackets

Women who now work from home often say, “I wish I still had my blazers.” It’s one of the top regrets about closet cleanups. All kinds of more casual jackets — quilted, barn, sherpa, fleece, athleisure and so on — have vied to replace blazers. However, women over 50 know the value and boost a tailored jacket provides. Who hasn’t thrown on a blazer to give a soft torso a firmer shape, to hide a belly bulge or saggy rear, or to look more confident at work or for serious events? And fans of the cropped, collarless “lady” jacket know firsthand how it provides big-bust coverage and room, pairs perfectly with high-rise pants and skirts, and serves as a feminine topper for midi dresses when a blazer can look “off.”

My advice? Pull your oldies out of the Goodwill bag and do a fit check. Is there pulling or creasing at the bust, arms or back, especially when you cross your arms or button up? None? So far, so good. If your jacket has a boxy shape or big retro shoulders, only a tailor can tweak and save them. This means removing shoulder pads, taking in excess fabric, raising the shoulder line and slimming down the sleeves for a more contemporary look. Give your keeper blazers and crops new life by wearing them in new ways: with jeans and a tee, of course, and also with the gently revised barrel pants (not so comically bowed anymore) and cargoes. Slip them over hoodies, and use a belt on straight blazers to give them a shapelier contour.

3. Shape-making dresses

Who doesn’t have dresses currently hanging out in their closet with an “I can’t wear that anymore” vibe? Minis, bodycon sheaths, tentlike shifts and spaghetti-strap slips are probably on your gotta-go list. What does that leave? The best keepers are dresses with a fit-and-flare shape, like wraps, faux wraps and shirtdresses. Whether you still have a waist or wish you did, have an abundance of curves, extra “won’t budge” pounds or a slimmer silhouette thanks to diet, exercise or a GLP-1 regimen, waist definition is the key to flattery, regardless of your shape and size. Peek at the wrap, shirt and fit-and-flare dresses here, and pull similar styles to add to your stay-at-home pile.

4. Faux-leather anything

The appeal of a little edge never goes away. Women over 50 who bought black faux-leather leggings, skirts, or pants in a trend frenzy and donated them a year later say, “I ended up buying them again!” Not because they want to look like a rock star, but because, they say, “Wearing leather makes me feel cool the way jeans and dark nail polish do.” And it does.

A black leather jacket can give tailored or wide-leg pants and midi skirts a gutsier look; leather leggings, pants or jeans tweak classic blazers and loafers for a modern aesthetic; and a leather skirt can turn a basic white shirt or black top into a polished work or dinner outfit. The leather pieces to keep now: skirts in a neutral color and a practical, just-above-the-knee to midi length (that’s a hard no to your old leather minis), buttery soft blazers, bombers and biker jackets that fit at the shoulders (no to big extended shoulder pads), and items that are free of fringe or studs. Think twice about a belted leather jacket if a belly bulge is now your nemesis. Have look-alikes to the ones here? Keep them going!

5. Pretty blouses with a dressy rep

So, you’re living a casual life in tees and pullovers and thinking about giving away all those fancy blouses? Don’t do it! Just delete their former “dressy” rep with a new 24/7 social life. Start wearing your floral, dotted and colorful blouses with sportier pieces, and style them in new ways. Think of them as you do an “evening out” fragrance or a red lipstick. You have no hesitation adding them to jeans or athleisure clothes, right?

Wear a blouse unbuttoned to a V, half-tucked or untucked, with casually rolled sleeves, or layered under sportier leather jackets or slouchy sweaters. Let prints and colors like the ones below add a personal spark to any outfit, day or night.

6. Your favorite modern jeans

The perfect jeans are one of the toughest things to find. That’s why they rank high on the “if only I hadn’t thrown them out” list. Rescue any that still fit your current body (emphasis on current), that have an even, consistent wash (no dated whiskers, light-to-dark ombre effects or fades), and have some stretch and a soft, broken-in feel (whether a light or a dark wash). Make sure they don’t squeeze, pinch or cut off leg circulation (like your old skinny jeans) and aren’t adorned with gaping rips at the thigh or knees (that’s out!). They should also have a rise that gives your bust enough space (so your breasts aren’t sitting on top of the waistband) and keeps a muffin top and belly happily tucked in.

What if the waistband or hems are a little frayed? If they’re faded or worn in spots? If they’ve got trend-proof straight or relaxed legs? A flare or bootcut look?  You hit the jeans jackpot. All add charm and style for a personalized look. Do any of yours check the right boxes? If so, put them back in your closet!

7. Skirts that make your legs and belly happy

Skirt-hoarding can be tricky. We all do it. Closets typically have a mixed bag of old minis and jean skirts, tailored pencil skirts, tiered summer skirts and new pull-on styles. For most women, the toss, sell or donate issue comes down to which skirts best handle the reality of leg veins and discolorations, belly bulges, and waists that have a tough time jockeying for space with a larger bust.

Do your body and closet a favor and keep elastic-waist problem-solvers like slip-on skirts and A-line shapes in midi lengths. They provide excellent leg camouflage; the best hem spots are below the knee or just under the fullest part of the calf to a few inches above the ankle (never at the fullest part of the calf — that’s a deal-breaker). This category winks at weight fluctuations and, when paired with untucked tops and relaxed sweaters, makes belly camouflage a non-issue, too. The combination of extra volume (even pull-ons with a straight look and flippy hem work) and length makes sitting or crossing your legs easier, provides ample room for hips, thighs and derriere, and makes skirts compatible with flats and sandals in warm weather and tall boots in winter. See what I mean with the pull-on styles below.

8. Classic trench coats

A trench coat is a forever-glam item. Never give it up … ever. If you do have one, don’t just save it for rainy days. Instead, think of your trench as a year-round layering piece. Cropped versions are a big trending deal right now, but the traditional below-the-knee lengths don’t date.

Wear a trench like fashion pros do: closed, with the signature belt fashionably knotted (never slipped through the buckle), or open. If you’re not a belt fan, just loosely knot the belt in back, or tuck an end into a pocket on either side. Pop your trench over a sweater and leggings to run errands, or slip it over a dressy dress or black pants for an evening out. Wear it over a blazer, jeans and loafers for a classic look; with a flow-y midi to go boho; over a tee, chunky sweater, leggings and boots for warmth; over a hoodie, joggers or leggings, and sneakers for a posh, sporty look. (Just flip up the hoodie’s hood for rainy-day drizzles.) Best in tan, beige, black or olive, a trench coat gives anything you wear a first-class vibe.

9. Boots and shoes that still make sense

Just because you went a little wild a few years ago and grabbed pointy-toe designer stilettos and over-the-knee boots on sale doesn’t mean they deserve residency in your closet today. Like old love affairs, you can remember them fondly and be glad they’re over.

What does make the cut? Ankle boots that slip easily on and off and work with your favorite pants or jeans without a struggle; ballet flats and loafers with supportive footbeds, sturdy soles and an almond toe box that doesn’t make your bunions or hammertoes scream; tall leather or suede boots, with ample calf space and a full-length zipper, that are sleek enough to work under midis or over leggings (make sure they have no extra bulky straps or buckles that chunk up calves!); rain and snow boots that are slip-proof and versatile enough for casual or polished clothes; current-looking sneakers; low espadrille wedges for summer events on grass or pebbly walkways; metallic sandals for instant dress-up; and low black pumps or slingbacks, because you will need them when youamousfootwear.com)

10. Fashion jewelry, slim belts and classy leather bags

The statement-accessory category is the one that gets the most callous toss-away. We’re not talking about your “good” jewelry (the diamond eternity band or the gold hoops you splurged on for your 50th), Mom’s pearls (fake but fabulous!) or any other sentimental sparklers and nostalgic extras. Women often discard the very item that gives their wardrobe personality and flavor. They’re usually the add-ons you bought spur of the moment, during a last-day sale or when urged on by trends.

Here’s a short list of those to keep and covet now: gold or silver bracelets to add diversity and interest to your wrist stack; long ropes of pearls and chains to stack and mix; pendants and brooches (yup they’re back!); a classy shoulder bag in a standout color or metallic; skinny belts, especially in leopard; and large, black, movie-star-worthy sunglasses. No regrets, ever!
