Women think of items in their wardrobe as loyal friends. After all, these are the clothes and accessories that got them through breakups and divorce, weight gain and diets, job losses and promotions, beach vacations and stormy days, celebrations and life’s blah moments. In fact, most women keep these besties long after their bodies, tastes and trends have moved on. Letting go forever is not easy. As a beauty and style editor and a personal shopper for women over 50, I’m on the front lines of closet cleanups. Here’s my advice on the current keepers.
1. Your best black basics
Black pants and tops are the fashion equivalent of a 911 rescue team. The inky-dark hue is their superpower, visually blanking out extra pounds, bloat, bulges and jiggles. But that’s not all black does. It makes inexpensive clothes look pricier and seasonal fabrics more versatile so you can easily mix and match the old and new, casual and dressy, stress-free. This makes black pieces, whether casual, sporty, dressy or tailored, the front-runners on what I’ll call your “keepers” list.
But be choosy. Check for fading or a dingy grayish or reddish hue on frequently worn and washed pieces; permanent stains from a drop of bleach or deodorant; pulls and pilling on sweaters; and styles that no longer flatter you. All make any black item a goner. Even adored black items that are now too tight, small, loose, short or baggy have gotta go. Check the ones below for good examples of what to save.
2. Still-great blazers and “lady” jackets
Women who now work from home often say, “I wish I still had my blazers.” It’s one of the top regrets about closet cleanups. All kinds of more casual jackets — quilted, barn, sherpa, fleece, athleisure and so on — have vied to replace blazers. However, women over 50 know the value and boost a tailored jacket provides. Who hasn’t thrown on a blazer to give a soft torso a firmer shape, to hide a belly bulge or saggy rear, or to look more confident at work or for serious events? And fans of the cropped, collarless “lady” jacket know firsthand how it provides big-bust coverage and room, pairs perfectly with high-rise pants and skirts, and serves as a feminine topper for midi dresses when a blazer can look “off.”

My advice? Pull your oldies out of the Goodwill bag and do a fit check. Is there pulling or creasing at the bust, arms or back, especially when you cross your arms or button up? None? So far, so good. If your jacket has a boxy shape or big retro shoulders, only a tailor can tweak and save them. This means removing shoulder pads, taking in excess fabric, raising the shoulder line and slimming down the sleeves for a more contemporary look. Give your keeper blazers and crops new life by wearing them in new ways: with jeans and a tee, of course, and also with the gently revised barrel pants (not so comically bowed anymore) and cargoes. Slip them over hoodies, and use a belt on straight blazers to give them a shapelier contour.
3. Shape-making dresses
Who doesn’t have dresses currently hanging out in their closet with an “I can’t wear that anymore” vibe? Minis, bodycon sheaths, tentlike shifts and spaghetti-strap slips are probably on your gotta-go list. What does that leave? The best keepers are dresses with a fit-and-flare shape, like wraps, faux wraps and shirtdresses. Whether you still have a waist or wish you did, have an abundance of curves, extra “won’t budge” pounds or a slimmer silhouette thanks to diet, exercise or a GLP-1 regimen, waist definition is the key to flattery, regardless of your shape and size.
