The minimum wage increase will rise as high as $12 to $15 an hour in many locations.

In English | Workers in much of the nation will get a pay raise in 2018, as minimum wage increases start to take effect in 21 states and 36 cities and counties.

Millions of workers will benefit once the changes are fully phased in, according to an analysis by the National Employment Law Project (NELP), a nonprofit research and advocacy group for low-income workers.

The raises in many places will bring the minimum wage as high as $12 to $15 an hour. In many others, the raises will bring the wage closer to the federal minimum of $7.25 an hour.

Several Silicon Valley cities, including Sunnyvale and Mountain View, will raise their minimum wages to $15 on Jan. 1.

The minimum wage for fast-food workers in New York state outside of New York City will increase from $10.75 to $11.75 over the weekend and reach $15 an hour by July 2021, CNN reported.

In Missouri, on the other hand, the wage will rise only slightly — from $7.70 to $7.85 an hour — in 2018 to adjust for inflation.

In Seattle, the wage will increase to $15.45 for businesses with 501 or more employees that don't offer medical benefits, and $15 an hour for those that do.

Public campaigns are underway, meanwhile, in 14 more states to set minimum wages at $12 to $15 an hour, according to NELP.
