Can my Social Security benefit be garnished for unpaid student loans?

En español | Federal law generally prohibits creditors from seizing federal benefits to pay a debt, except in limited situations, including for alimony, child support, federal taxes and the payment of student loans. However, if these loans are from a private institution, your benefits cannot legally be garnished.
