Where to Get a Part-Time Job for the Holidays

Flexible hours, good pay and discounts can make these jobs appealing

’Tis the season for holiday hiring announcements, which is good news for folks who need extra cash at the end of the year. However, this year the news is less festive than usual. Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas predicts that retailers will add 410,000 seasonal positions for this holiday season — the lowest number of jobs added since 2008. Inflation is making it harder for some companies to pass along labor costs to consumers, so those businesses are cutting back on hiring, according to workplace expert Andrew Challenger, the firm’s senior vice president.

Employment website ZipRecruiter is also seeing less hiring for the holiday season in a year in which many retailers cut jobs overall. Some companies are “worried that consumers are showing signs of rising financial strains,” says ZipRecruiter chief economist Julia Pollak. That means some businesses are concerned that consumer spending may be down this holiday season, another reason to trim seasonal hiring.

Fewer jobs mean that prospective employees may not see the hiring bonuses that companies have offered in recent years to get the help they need. Still, companies like Amazon and UPS are touting pay rates of more than $20 per hour.

However, opportunities are still out there if you’re looking for a seasonal job this year. Here are 10 companies that are adding to their ranks — at least temporarily.

1-800-Flowers Inc.

The parent company of brands such as Harry and David, The Popcorn Factory and PersonalizationMall.com announced that it is hiring 8,000 seasonal workers. The opportunities vary by brand, but the jobs are mainly for roles such as production and gift assembly, contact center, fulfillment center operations and distribution, among others.

Most positions are in the company’s regional hubs in Georgia, Illinois, Ohio and Oregon; however, remote contact center positions are also available. You can learn more about jobs and apply for positions online by visiting the 1-800-FLOWERS.COM Inc. careers page.

Amazon

One company bucking the Grinch-like approach to holiday hiring is Amazon. The e-commerce behemoth recently announced that it is hiring 250,000 full-time, part-time and seasonal workers for the holidays at an average of $20.50 per hour for customer fulfillment and delivery driver positions. Some locations pay an average of $28 per hour.

“Whether someone is looking for a short-term way to make extra money, or is hoping to take the first step toward a fulfilling and rewarding career at Amazon, there’s a role available for them,” said John Felton, Amazon’s senior vice president of worldwide operations, in the announcement. New hires could see a 13 percent pay increase over the next three years if they continue with Amazon, as well as a variety of benefits. Bath & Body Works

Bath & Body Works is looking for 30,000 seasonal in-store employees for the holidays. Holiday store associates receive “flexible schedules and a 40 percent storewide discount,” according to the company’s announcement. Candidates should apply as soon as possible, and the company says there are opportunities to transition to longer-term roles.

In addition, the company is hiring roughly 2,500 distribution center employees in its four central Ohio facilities. These roles pay $18.25 to $23.50 per hour depending on the position and shift, and also offer flexible schedules and a 40 percent discount on Bath & Body Works products. Candidates have until mid-December to apply. Those interested in either role can go to their local store for an interview; offers will be given immediately to qualified candidates, the company says. Candidates also may apply online for sales associate positions at bbwjobs.com or text BBWJOBS to 97211.

Best Buy

Electronics giant Best Buy did announce rounds of layoffs earlier this year, but the company has nearly 4,000 seasonal jobs listed on its website. Roles vary by location and include retail sales, warehouse workers, Geek Squad retail agents and delivery drivers.

Dick’s Sporting Goods

Love sports? Dick’s Sporting Goods announced that the company is adding 8,600 team members to its in-store rosters this holiday season. The company is touting “competitive” pay, 25 percent  discounts and optional DailyPay, which allows employees to get paid immediately for a fee instead of waiting for their regular payday.

Dick’s also closes stores on Thanksgiving Day to allow employees to spend the holiday with their families. Interested candidates can apply in-store or online.

Kohl’s

Kohl’s hasn’t issued an announcement, but its website says it’s hiring “thousands” of seasonal employees, both in-store and in its distribution centers. The company offers a 15 percent merchandise discount and flexible shifts. Prospective employees can find out more, sign up for seasonal hiring alerts and apply online.

Macy’s

Macy’s and its Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury stores are adding more than 38,000 full- and part-time seasonal retail and distribution center employees this year, which is comparable to last year’s hiring levels, the company announced.

The company encourages prospective employees to apply online or visit stores or supply chain locations. Online applications take five minutes, the company says, and most job offers are made within 48 hours. Pay starts at $15 per hour and the company also offers instant access to earned wages and flexible scheduling that includes optional overtime.

Employees may also be eligible for additional income through incentive programs and $500 referral bonuses for recruiting additional team members. For more information and to apply, visit macyJOBS.com, bloomingdalesJOBS.com and bluemercury.com.

Target

Target is looking to add 100,000 seasonal team members this year, in roles such as guest advocates, front-of-store attendants, general merchandising positions, food and beverage positions, and style consultants.

For those applicants who want very flexible schedules, the company is also adding members to its On Demand team, who have the option to add shifts on an as-desired basis to fit their schedules. Pay ranges from $15 to $24 per hour, and employees receive merchandise discounts, access to virtual health care through CirrusMD (employees pay for care), access to DailyPay and other benefits. Visit TargetSeasonalJobs.com to apply.

UPS

United Parcel Service (UPS) has announced that it is hiring 100,000 full- and part-time seasonal positions. These primarily include delivery drivers, commercial driver’s license (CDL) drivers and package handlers. The company says its streamlined digital application process takes less than 20 minutes to complete for most people, and nearly eight in 10 positions do not require an interview.

As a result of new agreements with the union, UPS employees will start at $21 per hour. Those interested in seasonal work at UPS should apply at upsjobs.com. UPS employees can refer friends and family for UPS jobs at ups.loop.jobs.

USPS

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will be adding 10,000 seasonal employees this holiday season. Positions range from drivers and mechanics to sorting and handling. For more information about working for the postal service and to apply, visit the agency’s website.
