Coronado Island, California
This peninsula in the San Diego area is a long-established resort destination (the luxury Hotel del Coronado opened back in 1888). It's temperate and sunny in winter, and a perfect spot to try stand-up paddleboarding in the bay or play golf overlooking the water.

Marco Island, Florida
This island near Naples and Fort Myers typically racks up temps in the 70s, and the beaches are wide, pristine and covered with shells. Head to the Marco Island Marriott Resort and Spa for a beach party, where a Polynesian fire dancer honors sunset with the traditional blowing of a conch shell.

San Juan, Puerto Rico
No passport is required to visit this archipelago, an unincorporated U.S. territory. Consider getting out of the city and zip-lining in the nearby Toro Negro rain forest or swimming in Vieques’ bioluminescent bay.

Bahamas
We all know the Bahamas is a warm, quick getaway, but who wants to deal with the crowds on the bigger islands? For peace and quiet, check out the Abacos, where small towns on separate islands offer great shopping, fishing, pretty white-sand beaches and even spooky graveyards.

Quito, Ecuador
Ecuador means "equator," so the weather in Quito (highest capital in the world) is warm year-round. Tour the city, with its unique organization where old, Catholic missions founded by different religious orders each claim a square or two. Visit the Otovalo market for amazing arts and crafts.

Baja California, Mexico
For outdoor activities, it's hard to beat a kayaking trip off the coast of Baja, in the Sea of Cortez. Tour operators set up luxury tent camps on isolated beaches, then guide you through the waters in double kayaks. Paddle among baby seals, then, by a fire on the beach, watch the moon set.
