Traveling Abroad? Here's What You Need to Know About International Mobile Phone Plans

Consider the costs and options among major providers, plus smart tips for using your phone overseas

AT&T | T-Mobile | Verizon

A few months ago, my family of four, including two predictably connected teens, went on a relaxing trip to Aruba. Our five days there left us with surprise international usage fees that more than doubled our monthly bill.

This came despite my due diligence: I had secured international plans, and I could swear I turned off roaming.

The experience, combined with our family’s mobile service challenges at home, revived my search for a better-fit carrier with more foolproof international options.

If you, like me, are among the 45 percent of 50-plus people considering traveling internationally in 2025, according to AARP’s Travel Trends Survey, you’d be wise to at least be aware of your carrier’s international offerings, too. Especially if you’re on a fixed budget, as many mature travelers are, or, like me, simply don’t love that kind of financial surprise.

The plan’s regular monthly rate and your destination are key puzzle pieces, too.

“International is a pretty big place, right? Are you going to Mexico and Canada? Are you going to the Caribbean? Are you going to Mongolia?” says Roger Entner, telecom analyst at Recon Analytics in Boston. “If you go with lower-cost plans, then you might not even have an option to use your phone in Mexico, Canada or wherever. You get what you pay for.”

Consider these basic comparables for the top carriers’ international plans:

AT&T

International Day Pass Plans are categorized by land and sea options. A new cruise-focused land and sea package launched in April 2025. Also of note, AT&T debuted an unlimited plan for consumers 55-plus on June 3.

• $12 per day on land in more than 210 destinations, with unlimited talk, text and high-speed data. It is $6 for each additional line used on the same calendar day. The cost is capped at 10 days per line in one billing cycle.

• $20 per day for land and sea, on more than 400 cruise ships, for limited talk and text. The pass covers all lines.

• Unlimited Plans don’t include roaming charges in Canada and Mexico.

T-Mobile

The carrier has three unlimited plans: Essentials, Experience More and Experience Beyond. All have discounts for users who are 55 and older. International features are automatic; there’s no need to sign up ahead of time.

• Essentials: Free texting in more than 215 destinations; high-speed data and unlimited calling available at $5 for up to 24 hours (512MB), $35 for up to 10 days (5GB) and $50 for 30 up to days (15GB).

• Experience More: Unlimited text and 15GB high-speed data in Mexico and Canada, as well as unlimited text and 5GB high-speed data in more than 215 destinations are included in the plan.

• Experience Beyond: Unlimited text and 30GB high-speed data in Mexico and Canada, as well as unlimited text and 15GB high-speed data in more than 215 destinations included in the plan.

• Full-flight texting and Wi-Fi with streaming are included, where available, in Experience Beyond and Experience More plans.

• Cruise coverage varies by plan and cruise. Check with T-Mobile.

Verizon

Verizon’s everyday 55+ Unlimited Plan is available only in Florida.

• $12 per day or $100 a month, per line, for unlimited data and text in more than 210 destinations. The day plan also includes unlimited talk, while the monthly plan caps it at 250 minutes.

• Unlimited plans include roaming in Canada and Mexico.

• $20 a day per line Cruise Daily Pass for unlimited data, talk and text while aboard ship — in-country rates apply when disembarked. Check with Verizon for availability.

• $20 per day per line In-flight Daily Pass for unlimited data, plus $1.99 a minute to talk (when available), 50 cents for sent texts, 5 cents for received texts.

The variance among these plans reflects the broader reality within mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), such as Google Fi, Boost Mobile, Cricket Wireless and Mint Mobile, which can range from high-speed coverage in more than 200 countries included in your plan to limited international roaming available, requiring you to look beyond your provider for an international connectivity solution, such as prepaid eSIMs (embedded subscriber identity modules).

Tips for using your mobile phone internationally

Check with your carrier before you go. Ensure your international plan is added, if needed, and covers your destination. If not, you may be subject to costly roaming charges. Jessica Parker, founder and travel adviser at Trip Whisperer, advises her older clients to go to the carrier’s physical location. “Mature travelers will probably feel more confident going down to the store,” she says. That way you can “run through all the questions with someone there looking at your device; if you call in, that could be dicey.”

Be flexible. Keeping your phone in airplane mode, for example, is just one of the ways to save money when using your phone internationally. Then, when you’re in Wi-Fi range, your phone acts “as if it’s in Kansas. It doesn’t cost you anything,” Entner says. He combines this tactic with others, including tapping into his carrier’s 24-hour travel pass. “If you value giving your grandchildren a call while you’re climbing up the pyramids, for God’s sake, pay the $10,” he says. “Don’t be penny-wise, pound-foolish.” If not, wait to connect to the Wi-Fi in the café post-climb.

Think in numbers. If you’re traveling with a partner, consider sharing one phone’s international plan, Parker says. If you’re with a friend group or on a multigenerational trip where travelers have different carriers, a hot spot that all can tap into may be the best route — a solution she recently suggested to a client headed to Iceland with her teenage grandson.

Check in with your carrier after your trip, too. We spotted our surprise international charges and were able to negotiate with our provider to get them a little lower.

Switch to a new carrier. If you decide that all things considered, including international calling costs, it’s time to make a switch, Entner recommends visiting your new provider in person, if possible. “Within half an hour, you walk out with a new phone and everything working,” he says. “They make the change for you. They love having you.”

I’ll be following his advice and keeping my fingers crossed for better connectivity and no unwanted surprises on my next international trip.
