She Moves the World: AARP South Carolina Celebrates Women’s History Month
Stepping Out for Women’s History Month
“She Moves the World” is designed as a joyful way to honor Women’s History Month. Throughout the program, participants will hear about more than a dozen women with South Carolina roots who have broken barriers, led change and inspired others.
These women include leaders in public service, sports, education, activism and community organizing. Names such as Nikki Haley, A’ja Wilson and Nancy Colleton Friday are among those who will be highlighted, along with many other women whose stories show the power of courage, talent and perseverance.
By sharing these stories in a relaxed and welcoming setting, AARP South Carolina aims to spotlight the many ways women have influenced life in our state and across the country, while encouraging participants to reflect on the women who have shaped their own lives.
Line Dancing for Fun, Health and Connection
At the heart of the event is line dancing, a popular way to stay active and have fun with others. Whether you are an experienced dancer or a complete beginner, you will be able to follow along with simple, guided routines. The focus is on enjoying the music, moving at your own pace and supporting one another.
Line dancing can help:
- Increase physical activity in a fun and social way
- Improve balance, coordination and stamina
- Boost mood and reduce stress
- Build connections with others through shared movement
“She Moves the World” gives participants an opportunity to experience these benefits in a supportive environment that welcomes people of all ages, especially those 50 plus.
Community Resources and Health Screenings
In addition to dancing, attendees will be able to visit health information tables staffed by community partners. These tables will feature helpful resources, health screenings and information about local support services.
Participants can:
- Learn about programs that support healthy aging and caregiving
- Pick up materials on disease prevention, wellness and screenings
- Connect with organizations that provide services in the Columbia area
- Ask questions and explore ways to stay informed and engaged
Free health screenings will also be available, giving participants a convenient way to check in on their health while they enjoy the festivities.
A Community Collaboration
“She Moves the World” reflects AARP South Carolina’s commitment to working with local partners to strengthen communities and support healthy aging. The event is presented in collaboration with the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department, which shares AARP’s goal of creating spaces where people can be active, connected and informed.
By bringing together line dancing, health information and stories of influential women, this event supports key AARP priorities, including:
- Health and wellness
- Community engagement
- Lifelong learning
- Social connection for people 50 plus and their families
