To help Rhode Islanders guard against identity theft and fraud, AARP Rhode Island will host a series of free “Fraud Fighting Fridays” document shredding events across the state in April, May and June. Open to the public and free for AARP members and nonmembers, the events are designed to provide a safe, convenient way for residents to securely dispose of sensitive personal documents.

“Identity theft and fraud remain serious concerns, especially as criminals continue to find new ways to misuse personal information,” said AARP Rhode Island State Director Catherine Taylor. “These free shredding events – part of our year-round fraud-prevention activity – are a free, simple but effective way for people to reduce their risk and gain peace of mind.

“Fraud prevention is about action,” added Taylor. “When AARP shows up in communities with trusted tools and local events, we’re helping neighbors protect themselves and each other. In 2024, according to the Federal Trade Commission, Rhode Island consumers reported more than 11,776 fraud cases, resulting in an alarming $20.7 million in losses. We must all fight back.”

Fraud Fighting Fridays will feature on-site, professional shredding. Participants are encouraged to bring documents that contain personal or financial information, such as:

  • Old bank statements and canceled checks
  • Credit card and loan documents
  • Medical and insurance records
  • Tax documents no longer needed
  • Utility bills and other papers with account numbers or Social Security numbers
