AARP Oklahoma is fighting to bring real financial relief to family caregivers who need and deserve support. Every day, thousands of Oklahomans care for spouses, parents and other loved ones, helping them remain in their own homes rather than enter costly long‑term care. However, 47% of family caregivers report financial setbacks, taking on debt, draining savings or struggling to afford basics like food and medicine. On average, caregivers spend $7,200 a year out of pocket, according to AARP.
Rep. Tammy West (R–Oklahoma City) filed House Bill 4118 to expand Oklahoma’s first in the nation Caring for Caregivers Tax Credit. The bill would remove the current age minimum of 62 for eligible family members and add mileage for medical appointments as a qualifying caregiver expense and ensure all eligible caregivers can access the same maximum credit of $3,000.
