The Division of Aging, part of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), wants to share an exciting opportunity for students across North Carolina to engage in a meaningful and creative initiative: the Future Self Contest, part of a statewide effort to raise awareness about ageism and intergenerational connection.

This contest invites Pre-K through 12th grade students to express their vision of a world where all ages are valued. Students may submit original work in a variety of formats, including:

  • Poetry or short essays (250–500 words)
  • Photography or visual art
  • Dance, skits, or music (video or audio files)

Submissions will be judged by grade level. The contest encourages students to reflect on themes such as kindness toward older adults, friendships across generations, and challenging stereotypes about aging. Winners will be announced by the end of April 2026.
