Publication offers recommendations for lawmakers and policymakers to tackle challenges facing older Long Islanders
NEW YORK –AARP New York today released “Blueprint for Action,” a comprehensive policy guide with recommendations, from supporting caregivers to implementing Complete Streets, to help elected officials tackle important issues facing older Suffolk County residents.
AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel said: “This blueprint shows that age-friendly investments aren’t just the right thing to do—they’re smart economics. By prioritizing home- and community-based services, increasing options for affordable housing, and developing safer streets, Suffolk County can build stronger, more sustainable communities for every generation.”
New York’s 50-plus population creates an enormous economic impact and will drive economic growth for the next 30 years. The 50-plus population contribution to GDP is forecast to reach $2.2 trillion in 2050—over 45% of the state’s projected GDP—when people 50-plus will account for 41% of the population.
The most recent AARP Livability Index confirms that Suffolk County rated below average for New York State, particularly with transportation, environmental quality and housing opportunities, while other areas such as economic opportunities and health rated above average.
With a substantial older adult population and 38% of residents ages 50 and older, the county relies heavily on unpaid family caregivers to support aging residents.
Suffolk County has seen a 48% increase in senior poverty over the past decade, with 15,692 seniors now living below the poverty line. At the same time, 45% of Suffolk County seniors have no retirement savings, creating a population that cannot afford private care services and must rely on family caregivers and public support systems.
The economic strain on Suffolk’s caregivers is significant. The AARP survey found that 97% of Long Island caregivers incurred personal expenses, and 42% reported feeling financially strained. With 76% of caregivers working while providing care, Suffolk businesses face productivity challenges and potential turnover costs.
Key recommendations from this guide include:
AARP staff and volunteers will meet with leaders across Suffolk County to discuss policy solutions and push for increased support and attention to the issues and recommendations outlined in the blueprint.
