AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel issued the following statement today regarding Proposal 50 from the Master Plan for Aging.
“The numbers - and the need - are undeniable. More than 3.5 million residents are now 65 or older, and older adult poverty has surged by nearly 50% in the last decade.
Meanwhile, thousands of older New Yorkers remain stuck on waitlists for essential services, including transportation to medical appointments, home delivered meals, adult day programs, and respite care.
The solution is both clear and cost effective: fully fund aging services. Today, less than one percent of the State Budget goes to the New York State Office for Aging, despite the fact that every $15 million invested would generate $50 million in Medicaid savings. The cost of inaction far outweighs the financial and long-term impacts of acting.
AARP New York urges state leaders to adopt Proposal 50 and fully fund the services that older adults and their caregivers depend on. The Master Plan for Aging was a promise to New Yorkers; now it must be fulfilled. Older New Yorkers cannot afford further delays.”
