Fraud is epidemic today, as we all know from the constant barrage of bogus texts, emails and phone calls. The result has been devastating for many: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) estimated in a 2025 report to Congress that, when accounting for underreporting, as much as $195.9 billion was stolen from Americans via financial fraud in 2024 alone. Of that, as much as $81.5 billion was stolen from older adults.
This April, AARP is taking action to help protect families and neighbors from this onslaught of fraud — and we’re doing it where it matters most: in the communities we serve. As part of AARP Fraud Prevention Month, AARP Connecticut will host four free events – two in-person and two virtual – offering practical ways to stay informed, safe and connected.
At these events, you'll be able to, among other things, learn the latest scam tactics, get free resources and connect with trained volunteer fraud fighters.
Virtually join AARP Connecticut and officials from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to talk about relationship and investment scams. Fraudsters will slowly gain the trust of their victims before encouraging them to "invest" in various schemes - all with the goal of stealing their hard-earned money. Learn how to spot the red flags and stay safe in the digital age.
Friday, April 3, from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m.

Fraud losses are at an all-time high, driven by increasingly sophisticated AI powered imposter scams, cryptocurrency investment fraud, relationship scams, and online shopping scams. AARP Connecticut will host two free compelling and informative free in-person events featuring the personal story of a Connecticut resident whose relationship scam resulted in nearly $1 million in losses, the head of the national AARP Fraud Helpline, and an expert from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Together, they will shed light on the fraud and scam trends affecting consumers in Connecticut and across the country - and share what you can do to protect yourself and others.
A free boxed lunch will be served at both events. Attendees at the Stamford event will be granted access to the Stamford Museum & Nature Center following the event and can stay thru closing.
