AARP Highlights Growing Concerns about Fraud Among Asian American and Pacific Islander Communities

WASHINGTON — New AARP research underscores the scale and urgency of fraud impacting Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. Roughly three in four (75%) AAPI adults age 50-plus believe they are at least somewhat likely to be targeted by fraud in the future, reflecting widespread awareness of the threat. That concern is well-founded: an estimated 4.1 million AAPI adults across age groups have experienced a scam, with an average loss of $5,800.

Many AAPI adults also point to emerging risks, including the rise of AI-driven fraud, highlighting the need for education and prevention tools that keep pace with increasingly sophisticated tactics.

As AARP marks AAPI Heritage Month this May, the organization is both raising awareness of these growing risks and celebrating the rich cultural heritage, lasting contributions, and enduring impact of AAPI communities across the United States.

“At AARP, we are committed to ensuring that all communities—especially older adults—have access to trusted information and resources to protect themselves,” said Daphne Kwok, Vice President of Audience Strategy, AARP. “As we celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, we also recognize the importance of equipping individuals and families with the tools they need to stay safe and financially secure.”

Observed annually in May, AAPI Heritage Month recognizes the history, culture, and achievements of Americans with roots in Asia and the Pacific Islands. It is a time to reflect on the resilience, innovation, and leadership of AAPI communities as our nation celebrates our 250th anniversary. AARP encourages individuals, families, and communities to engage in the celebration by learning about AAPI history, supporting AAPI-owned businesses, and participating in local and national events.

Throughout the month, AARP will spotlight stories, resources, and programming that uplift AAPI voices while helping older adults and their families stay informed and protected. To learn more about AARP’s AAPI Heritage Month programming, visit:
