When the AARP Louisiana team began working in Kenner, Louisiana, a city of about 60,000 residents, they hosted a listening session to learn about the community’s needs and concerns.

Top on the list: The town had only one public transit bus route, the stops were inconveniently located (many were unmarked), and the schedule had lengthy gaps in service resulting in long wait times.

“We’d have to wait an hour,” a resident named Joann recalls in the AARP video below. “There was no place to sit down. I’m used to seeing people put their chairs, dining room chairs, out at the bus stop.”

To confirm and document the challenges, AARP volunteers rode the bus. They then got the city’s mayor, Michael Glaser, to do so as well.

Within a year, the city launched improved bus service by adding new stops, placing signage and installing bus stop shelters with seating.
