5 Best Latex Mattress Toppers of 2026: Tested and Reviewed

These removable accessories could add support and bouncy, responsive cushioning to your bed

Looking for a quick-fix solution to change the feel of your bed? Consider a mattress topper. You can place these removable layers on top of your bed to change the firmness, make your bed more comfortable or extend its lifespan. Since toppers are more affordable than a new bed, they can be good temporary options to give budget-minded older adults more time to find a new mattress.

Mattress toppers are often made from memory foam, but some are made from latex, which has a reputation for being bouncy and may help older adults with mobility limitations get in and out of bed more easily. Latex also tends to be good at dissipating heat, so hot sleepers or those who experience hot flashes may find that latex mattress toppers offer cooling relief.

Through our research and testing, we've found that the best latex mattress toppers tend to deliver high responsiveness for easier movement, good temperature regulation and superior pressure relief. Some latex toppers are made from synthetic latex, which is derived from petrochemicals (manmade chemical compounds that play a large role in the production of products like plastic, synthetic rubber and detergents.) Some latex toppers are also made from natural latex, which is derived from natural rubber tree sap. But the best latex toppers on our list all have organic, natural or other certifications from third-party organizations that attest to their quality and the fact that they’re made without certain harmful materials.

For this review, our AARP Smart Picks team rounded up the best latex mattress toppers based on their performance in lab testing and feedback from testers ages 45 and older, who we recruited to give us their unbiased perspective.

Read on for our top picks. All models tested were queen-size toppers and were assessed on the same firm, all-foam bed for consistency. For more information on our process, see the "How we tested the best latex mattress toppers" section of this review.

Benefits of latex foam

Latex offers a responsive surface that can make it easier to get in and out of bed or change positions, says Kathryn Strait, an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in sleep medicine at Norton Sleep Specialists in Louisville, Kentucky. Another benefit? Latex foams may ease pressure on arthritic joints, she says.

Key takeaways from our testing

Relieves pressure and supports the spine. Jennifer, a 45-year-old tester, rated the Saatva Natural Latex Topper highly for pressure relief and spinal alignment. She awarded this topper an impressive score for pressure relief across all three tested sleeping positions (side, back and stomach), noting it took pressure off her hips and shoulders. She also praised this topper for its ability to keep her spine in alignment, awarding it a favorable score for all three sleeping positions. “It’s very supportive on my back,” she said.

Helps dissipate heat. This topper earned a near-perfect cooling score. It had the best performance on this list in our cooling gun test, which involves measuring the topper’s starting temperature and comparing it to the temperature after a tester has lain on the surface for one minute. The topper’s surface retained only 6.1 degrees of Jennifer’s body temperature in that test. Jennifer also awarded this topper a near-top-level rating for responsiveness, which means its bounce could help older adults change positions or get out of bed more easily. Latex foam is naturally responsive and tends to snap back into place faster than memory foam. “You don’t sink in too much,” she said, adding that the topper was “bouncy” and “easy to move around on.”

Latex mattress toppers and temperature regulation

Latex mattress toppers may help with temperature regulation, since the material is naturally breathable and most latex toppers have perforated design for ventilation, says Dr. Michael Breus, a clinical psychologist and sleep medicine doctor in Manhattan Beach, California.

Only one firmness option. While Jennifer said the firmness and feel of this medium firm topper were “good overall,” she noted it was a bit firmer than she likes. And while she gave this product very good scores or higher across all tested sleeping positions for spinal alignment, she noted that it doesn’t have much “plushness” or body contouring. “It’s very supportive on my back and my spine feels aligned,” she said. “But it’s not letting me sink that deeply.” Older adults who prefer a softer option (such as those who have joint pain or other chronic pain)or those who’d prefer a more firm option may want to consider the PlushBeds Natural Latex Mattress Topper, which has five options for firmness levels.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Reasonably priced
  • Near-perfect pressure relief for side sleepers
  • High-scoring temperature regulation

Cons

  • Lackluster edge support
  • Inconsistent pricing

Features

  • Thickness options: 2 or 3 inches
  • Materials: Latex foam
  • Firmness options: Medium or plush
  • Straps: No

Key takeaways from our testing

Low price and high scores. The Avocado Eco Organic Latex Topper is our best value pick because of its lower price and overall strong performance in our testing. We tested the 2-inch medium firmness model of this topper, which retails for $399 for a queen. That’s the second-most affordable option on this list, behind the Saatva Natural Latex Topper, our best overall pick, at $345.

Relieves pressure for side sleepers. Bryan, a 62-year-old higher-weight sleeper, awarded this topper almost-perfect ratings for pressure relief for the side sleeping position, noting that the topper molded around his body. “My shoulders feel aligned, and it’s easing pressure on my hips,” he said. “There’s no strain in my lower back.” He also gave this topper admirable pressure relief scores for back and stomach sleeping.

Tester Bryan said the Avocado Eco Organic Latex Topper was soft and “springy” when he removed the cover to assess the quality of the latex foam.

Sinking edges. Bryan gave this topper an unfavorable score for edge support. He said there wasn’t much support when he was lying on the edge, noting that the perimeter felt softer than the center of the topper. “I might roll off,” he said. “I’m just sinking into the edges.” For older adults who prioritize sturdy edges to help prevent them from falling out of bed, we recommend the topper from PlushBeds, which nabbed the highest edge support score on this list.

Best Organic Latex: Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper

Score: 9.2 out of 10

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Made with natural and organic materials
  • Cushioning, soft feel
  • Near-top-level responsiveness

Cons

  • Only one firmness and height option
  • Passable edge support

Features

  • Thickness: 2 inches
  • Materials: Latex foam
  • Firmness: Soft
  • Straps: No

Key takeaways from our testing

Top organic choice. The Birch Plush Organic Topper features latex that’s certified by the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and an organic cotton cover. This GOLS certification means this product is made of organically grown rubber latex and meets permissible limits for harmful substances, emission test requirements and more. In addition, this topper has a soft feel: the company rates it a 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale, with 10 as the firmest. Bryan said the topper felt very soft and he sank into it comfortably, but he noted he wanted to feel more support. He gave this model satisfactory pressure relief scores.

Highly responsive. Bryan awarded this topper a near-perfect score for responsiveness, indicating it has a high, movement-assisting bounce. He said the Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper was easy to move around on because he wasn’t sinking in too deeply and “feeling trapped.” A highly responsive topper may benefit older adults who have mobility limitations, as it may require less effort to switch positions than a thicker topper that allows for deeper sinkage.

The sinkage of a 45-pound kettlebell on the Birch Plush Organic Topper being measured by a lab tester
The surface of the Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper sank only 3.25 inches under a 45-pound kettlebell, which qualifies as “moderate sinkage.” Less sinkage may help those with mobility challenges change positions in bed easier.
AARP Smart Picks

Our lab team conducted a sinkage test to verify responsiveness, which involves placing a 45-pound kettlebell in the center of the topper and recording how much the surface and the mattress underneath, collapses. In that test, the Birch Plush topper had moderate sinkage at 3.25 inches. For older adults who want movement-assisting bounce but don’t want to sink too deeply into the material, this topper could be a nice option to consider.

Lack of options for firmness. Like other toppers on this list, the Birch Plush Organic Topper is available in only one firmness level — but it’s the most expensive topper among those with this limitation. The PlushBeds and Brooklyn Bedding toppers are more expensive than this one, but both have several options for firmness levels. Bryan, who has a higher weight, said this Birch topper didn’t offer him enough spinal support because his shoulders sank too far. Other people who have a higher weight also may want more support than this soft topper can offer.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • One of many firmness options from this company
  • Solid responsiveness
  • Above-average temperature regulation

Cons

  • Cover isn’t included in the purchase price
  • No trial period

Features

  • Thickness options: 2 or 3 inches
  • Materials: Latex foam
  • Firmness options: Soft, medium soft, medium, firm or extra firm
  • Straps: No

Key takeaways from our testing

Multiple firmness options for shoppers. On this list, the PlushBeds Organic Latex Mattress Topper offers the most variety of choice for consumers since it has two height options (2 inches or 3 inches) and five options for firmness levels (soft, medium soft, medium, firm or extra firm). We tested a 3-inch medium-firm model.

Responsive organic latex. Jennifer, a 45-year-old tester, gave this topper a respectable responsiveness score. She noted that although she sank in slightly, she didn’t feel “trapped” in the foam. This topper’s high responsiveness may help you change positions at night, though Jennifer said the topper felt very “jiggly,” like a waterbed. The perforated design may help increase airflow, which can help the topper to be more breathable and dispel heat better. In our cooling gun test, this model earned a solid score for temperature regulation after the surface temperature increased by only 7.5 degrees.

Tester Jennifer was bothered by the lack of a cover on the PlushBeds Organic Latex Mattress Topper (pictured here) and said she really wanted to cover it with other bedding.
AARP Smart Picks

Cover costs extra. The PlushBeds Organic Latex Mattress Topper — which is made of perforated latex foam — does not include a cover. Jennifer found herself immediately seeking an alternative. “There's no cover, so I feel like I really want to cover it up with a sheet,” she said. She also pointed out the feel of the topper, saying it felt “extremely staticy” and was “fluid and jelly-like.” You can add an organic cotton cover to this topper, though it will cost you $112 for a queen. Since this item is already the second-most expensive topper on this list, we don’t like this additional cost.

Best for Side Sleepers: Brooklyn Bedding 3-Inch Latex Topper

Score: 9.3 out of 10

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Above-average pressure relief for side sleepers
  • Bouncy design helps support easier movement
  • One of multiple firmness levels

Cons

  • No straps
  • Most expensive topper on this list

Features

  • Thickness: 3 inches
  • Materials: Latex foam
  • Firmness options: Soft, medium or firm
  • Straps: No

Key takeaways from our testing

Sinking pressure relief. We tested the medium model of the Brooklyn Bedding 3-Inch Latex Topper and found it excels at pressure relief, especially for side sleepers. Bryan gave this topper an above-average rating for side sleepers, noting his shoulder sank in and he didn’t feel any pressure building. “It’s supportive but still feels soft,” Bryan said. “I feel no pressure. My hips are sinking nicely and my spine is aligned,” he said while lying on his side.

Favorable responsiveness. Bryan said this topper was “very easy” to move around on, noting no resistance when he tried to switch positions. “It’s basically springing me from one position to the next,” he said. This is an important factor for older adults with mobility issues or combination sleepers who often switch positions at night. He awarded this topper a near-perfect score for responsiveness.

Expensive. The Brooklyn Bedding 3-Inch Latex Topper is the most expensive topper on this list, with a retail price of $679 for a queen. That’s almost double the cost of our best overall winner by Saatva and our best value winner by Avocado. While it offers high-scoring pressure relief and spinal alignment in all tested sleeping positions, you may be able to find similarly high scores at a fraction of the price from another model on our list, such as the one by Avocado.

How we tested the best latex mattress toppers

We started our process by researching the market. Which mattress toppers are popular and why? Who has the best customer reviews — and are the reviews legitimate? After talking with medical experts, we narrowed our list from 20 toppers to the 11 we tested in our lab.

To identify their strengths and weaknesses, we used controlled tests to assess each topper’s pressure relief, responsiveness, edge support, sinkage rate and temperature regulation. Then we recruited testers ages 45 and older to give us their unbiased feedback.

How to choose the best latex mattress topper for you

The best latex mattress toppers can change the surface of your mattress to make it feel more comfortable. Breus, the sleep medicine doctor in California, says these products also can alleviate pressure for your hips and shoulders.

So how can you select the right topper for you? Your choice can depend on a number of factors. If you’re looking for a quality latex topper, consider the following features.

Thickness

Latex mattress toppers vary in thickness, though most fall in the 2- to 4-inch range. Some options like the Saatva Natural Latex Mattress Topper — which is 1.5 inches thick — fall outside of this range. Thicker toppers may provide greater pressure relief, which can be helpful if you’re trying to soften a firm mattress, but that relief is not guaranteed.

Also consider the height of your existing mattress and bedframe to ensure you can safely get in and out of bed with the topper's added height. The toppers on this list have a maximum height of 3 inches.

Firmness

Softer toppers tend to allow for more pressure relief. While firmer toppers still provide cushion, though usually offer more spinal support. Several toppers on this list offer options for multiple firmness levels. And all of them offer free trial periods except PlushBeds, allowing you to test the firmness level at home and have the option for a return or exchange if it’s not the right fit.

If you’re not sure which firmness level you should choose, consider your sleeping position.

  • Side sleepers: Typically, people who sleep on their sides do best with a softer latex mattress topper that allows them to sink into the material for pressure relief and keep their spines aligned. For most side sleepers, medium firm or softer toppers tend to be most suitable.
  • Back sleepers: Sleeping on your back generally pairs well with a firmer latex mattress topper to support neutral spinal alignment. Back sleeping on a too-soft topper may cause your hips and shoulders to sink unevenly, which can strain your spine. As a result, a topper that’s medium firm or firmer may be best for back sleepers.
  • Stomach sleepers: Older adults who sleep on their stomachs generally prefer the firmest topper to maintain spinal alignment. Consider a topper that’s medium firm or firmer.
  • Combination sleepers: To find the best topper firmness as a combination sleeper, it’s likely best to match firmness to your most common sleeping position.

Organic and natural certifications

If you’re seeking a natural latex topper, look for certifications on the product’s website indicating that the latex foam is environmentally friendly and backed by third-party organizations.

  • Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS): For a latex mattress topper to be GOLS-certified, it must contain 95 percent or greater organically grown rubber latex. This standard also sets permissible limits for harmful substances, emission test requirements and more. Avocado, Birch and PlushBeds toppers have this certification.
  • Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS): GOTS-certified latex mattress toppers are made from organic fibers and meet rigorous environmental and social standards. Products must meet this standard from manufacturing to the final product. Avocado and PlushBeds toppers have this certification.
  • GREENGUARD: A GREENGUARD-certified latex mattress topper complies with indoor chemical emission standards. The GREENGUARD Gold Certification Standard is an elevated certification with stricter limits designed to protect more sensitive individuals, such as children or older adults with certain health concerns. Avocado, Birch and PlushBeds have GREENGUARD Gold certifications.

Other certifications

While the Saatva and Brooklyn Bedding toppers in this review don’t have the certifications listed above, they do have other third-party certifications.

  • CertiPUR-US: A topper that is CertiPUR-US certified, like the one from Brooklyn Bedding, has been screened for harmful chemicals and low volatile organic compound (VOC emissions. VOCs are commonly found in everyday items like cleaning products, air fresheners and cosmetics. Older adults are at a greater risk of experiencing health problems associated with VOCs, according to the American Lung Association.
  • eco-INSTITUT: This certification deems a topper, like the one from Saatva,to be free of potentially harmful chemicals, emissions and pollutants.
  • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC): In holding this certification, the Saatva topper is certified for meeting certain sustainability standards.

How much do the best latex mattress toppers cost?

The latex mattress toppers on our list range in price from $345 to $679 for queen sizes, with the Saatva Natural Latex Mattress Topper being the most affordably priced and the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper being the most expensive.

Behind the topper by Saatva, the Avocado Eco Organic Latex Mattress Topper is the most affordably priced at $399 and earned our “best value” designation due to its price and performance. You can see a basic breakdown of pricing in the chart below.

Note: Some pricing may vary for certain companies such as Avocado and PlushBeds, which offer models in different heights and firmness options. For example, we tested a 3-inch PlushBeds Natural Latex Mattress Topper in a medium level of firmness, which retails at $661 for a queen. However, a 2-inch medium model is $499, and a 2-inch extra-firm model retails for $511.

Companies often include mattress toppers in their sales, so be on the lookout for discounts, especially around holidays.

FAQs

What are the benefits of a latex mattress topper?

The benefits of a latex mattress topper include a natural resistance to mold and bacteria, breathability and pressure relief, says Strait, the sleep medicine APRN in Kentucky. Since latex tends to be firmer than memory foam, latex toppers also may offer a higher level of support than memory foam, which can be a benefit for some older adults. But if you’d prefer something softer, you may prefer another topper material.

Who are latex mattress toppers good for?

These toppers may be good for people who like a higher level of support and want to change the feel or firmness of their current mattress. Latex toppers also are known for being extremely responsive, and they are naturally breathable with a perforated design that may help regulate temperature. So, if you’re seeking a product with these features, a latex topper could be a good option for you.

Which is better: latex or memory foam mattress toppers?

Neither type of topper is “better” than the other overall. The best mattress topper for you depends on your priorities and preferences. For example, latex toppers generally don’t allow you to sink in as far as a memory foam topper would. So if sinkage is your priority, memory foam may suit you better. In addition, latex is a highly resilient material that tends to be more durable than memory foam, as moisture may cause memory foam to break down more quickly. So if you prioritize durability, latex may suit you better.
