If you’re considering buying an organic mattress, Avocado may already be on your radar. This company is known for producing certified-organic mattresses made with environmentally sustainable materials and free of fiberglass, polyurethane foam and harsh chemicals. They’re also Greenguard Gold certified, meaning they have low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
VOCs are potentially harmful compounds in some cleaning products, mattresses and other everyday items that can “off-gas,” or release, into the air you breathe. Older adults are at a greater risk of experiencing health problems associated with VOCs, which include eye, nose and throat irritation, according to the American Lung Association.

In addition to promoting indoor air quality, Avocado organic mattresses may also be gentle on the environment: They hold six green certifications, including the Global Organic Textile Standard, Environmental Working Group verification and OEKO-TEX Standard Class I, the strictest tier of independent testing against harmful substances.
For many health-minded buyers, these certifications are important. In 2025, when we surveyed 300 adults ages 50 and older who had purchased a new mattress in the last three years, 18 percent said organic and natural materials were most important to them when shopping for their new bed.
For this review, our AARP Smart Picks team, alongside older adult testers we recruited, evaluated two popular mattresses from this company — the Eco Organic and Avocado Green — and rated their performance on key metrics like spinal support and pressure relief. Both beds helped ease pressure and promote spinal alignment, according to our testers.
Read on for our reviews of the Avocado Eco Organic and Avocado Green to find out how the models fared — and which one has a much better warranty. (We tested queen-size models.)
Comparing Avocado models
What to know about Avocado
Avocado uses certified organic wool, cotton and latex. Its beds are non-toxic and include environmentally friendly materials, which could make them a good fit for eco-conscious older adults or anyone with chemical sensitivities. The company's use of recycled steel coils and natural latex foam means these beds are built to last, with limited warranties ranging from 10 to 25 years, depending on the model.
The Eco Organic and the Avocado Green earned very good to perfect scores from our testers for pressure relief and spinal alignment in all tested sleeping positions (side, back and stomach). This balance of cushioning and support is crucial for a sound night's sleep, especially for older adults who experience shoulder or back pain.
Both mattresses also earned impressive scores for edge support (meaning the edges are solid), providing extra stability when getting in and out of bed. They also received excellent scores in our bounce test, which gauges how responsive the surface is. This bounciness that may help aid movement when switching positions, which can be a helpful feature for older adults with limited mobility.
Another area where this product line excelled is motion isolation. Despite being hybrid beds (meaning they’re made with a mix of metal coils and foam), which are typically bouncy, the Avocado mattresses we tested received admirable scores for motion isolation. That means your partner’s movement is less likely to ripple across the bed and wake you up.
Best Value: Avocado Eco Organic
Score: 9.9 out of 10
Pros and cons
Pros
- Reasonably priced
- Stellar bounce, making movement easier
- Impressive pressure relief
Cons
- High heat retention
- Only one firmness option
Features
- Type: Hybrid
- Firmness: Medium
- Best sleeping positions: Side, back and stomach
Key takeaways from our testing
Wallet-friendly organic mattress. The Eco Organic is the less-expensive option of the two mattresses we tested, retailing for $1,599, or about 33 percent less than the Avocado Green. But both earned similarly high overall scores in testing, so we think the Eco Organic is the better value. Testers also appreciated that this bed, like the Green, is certified organic and has up to 1,000 coils made from recycled steel to help support your body while easing pressure.
Responsive bounce and strong pressure relief. The Eco Organic earned a top-level rating in our bounce test, in which our lab team drops a 15-pound ball onto the mattress and measures how high the ball rebounds. The ball bounced 21 inches, well above the 17-inch average across all beds we’ve tested. This responsiveness can make it easier to switch positions and get out of bed, a benefit for older adults with mobility issues who may need the extra assistance. It also received exemplary pressure relief scores for side and back sleeping and a near-perfect score for stomach sleeping. Donna, a 60-year-old tester and side sleeper, said that while lying on her side, her “pressure points are adequately cushioned and cradled.” She also had high praise for how balanced the bed felt when lying on her back: “I feel like there's firm support, but it still has enough cushioning to prevent pressure. Everything feels equally supported — even my legs feel sort of cradled, and it's really nice.”
Poor cooling performance. The Eco Organic earned a disappointing score in our cooling gun test, which measures how much heat the bed retains after our lab team applies a heating pad for one minute. The less heat retained, the higher the score. After a one-minute cool-off period, its surface temperature was still 22.4 degrees higher than the starting temperature — well above the average of 18 degrees across all beds we’ve tested. This is worth considering if you tend to overheat at night. The Avocado Green performed slightly better in the cooling gun test, but still earned only an average score.
Best Warranty: Avocado Green
Score: 9.9 out of 10
Pros and cons
Pros
- Near-perfect pressure relief
- Long warranty
- Above-average edge support
Cons
- Expensive
- So-so cooling performance
Features
- Type: Hybrid
- Firmness options: Plush, medium and firm
- Best sleeping positions: Side, back and stomach
Key takeaways from our testing
Promotes spinal alignment and eases pressure. Testers gave the Avocado Green perfect or near-perfect scores in pressure relief and spinal alignment across all tested sleeping positions. Tester Donna especially liked it for back sleeping. “It feels very supportive,” she said. “My body feels aligned, and I don’t feel any pressure building up.” Donna also gave the mattress a near-perfect score for stomach sleeping, a position she doesn’t normally like. “It's very comfortable. There's no pressure building at my chest or ribs, which I typically experience on my stomach," she said. Another plus for this model? Its limited warranty is more than double that of the Eco Organic — 25 years compared to 10. Although the Green is more expensive, the longer warranty may be worth it. This company is unique in having different warranty lengths for different models.
Sturdy edges promote stability. Donna said she appreciated the bed's edge support, noting the sides of the mattress felt just as firm and supportive as the center. “I feel zero risk of falling, even when scooting right up on the edge,” she said. In our lab-controlled edge support test, which measures how much the mattress sinks under a 150-pound sandbag, the bed’s edges compressed only 3 inches, resulting in a solid score. (The average sinkage of every bed we’ve tested is 3.7 inches.) This strong edge support likely comes from the bed’s reinforced steel perimeter.
Average affordability and cooling. This bed is more expensive than the Eco Organic: A queen-size, medium firmness Avocado Green retails for $2,399, which could put it out of budget for some. Nearly 80 percent of the older adults in our survey said they had a budget of $2,000 or less for a new bed. Another knock? In our cooling gun test, the Green garnered only an average score, retaining 17 degrees. Still, that’s notably better temperature regulation than the Eco Organic’s cooling performance.
How much do Avocado mattresses cost?
The two queen-sized Avocado mattresses we tested — the Eco Organic and Avocado Green — retail for $1,599 or $2,399.
The Eco Organic is the more wallet-friendly option at $1,599, while the Avocado Green’s medium model is the less expensive one at $2,399. The price of a queen-size Avocado Green depends on the firmness level: $1,999 for firm, $2,399 for medium and $2,999 for plush. The Avocado Green is also available in an extra-firm queen model for $2,599 and ultra-plush for $3,999.
Is an Avocado mattress right for you?
Avocado offers multiple mattress designs and firmness levels, all featuring certified organic and natural materials. The Green, its flagship model, is available in three main firmness levels and two specialized variations: extra-firm and ultra-plush. The Eco Organic is considered its most wallet-friendly option. The company also offers the Luxury Organic, a high-end option made with 17 layers, and the Vegan, a wool-free variation of the Avocado Green (we haven’t tested these models yet).

Do you change positions throughout your sleep?
Your preferred sleeping position influences the firmness level you'll want in a mattress. If you are a combination sleeper (meaning you change positions throughout the night), then the Avocado Green may be better, since it comes in three main firmness options: plush, medium and firm, and two specialized versions: extra-firm and ultra-plush. The Eco Organic only comes in medium firmness.
Softer surfaces are typically better for side sleepers, who need extra cushioning under the shoulders and hips to keep the spine properly aligned. Medium-firm to firm mattresses are typically better for back and stomach sleepers to promote spinal alignment.
While both beds scored highly in pressure relief and spinal alignment across all tested sleeping positions, the Avocado Green’s three firmness options makes it work for a wider range of sleepers.
Firmness is typically measured on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the firmest. These are the mattress industry's recommendations for different sleep positions.
- Side sleepers: Soft to medium-firm (between 4 and 6.5)
- Back sleepers: Medium to medium-firm (between 5 and 6.5)
- Stomach sleepers: Medium-firm to firm (between 6.5 and 9)
- Combination sleepers: Choose the firmness based on your main position
The right firmness can also vary by body type. Higher-weight sleepers may prefer a firmer mattress, for example, since they benefit from a more supportive bed.
Do I have mobility limitations?
If you benefit from a little extra assistance to switch positions at night, a springy surface may help you move more easily. Both beds received exemplary marks in our bounce test.

Additionally, a mattress with sturdy, supportive edges can help if you have trouble getting in and out of bed. Both mattresses scored well in our edge support test. As Funke Afolabi-Brown, MD, a board-certified sleep medicine physician and founder and CEO of Restful Sleep MD in Horsham, Pennsylvania, explains, “A bed with a sturdy edge can help older adults and those with mobility issues to get up more easily from bed and reduce fall risk.”
Both the Avocado Green and Eco Organic feature a reinforced perimeter of steel coils and double-stitched seams, but the Green scored slightly higher than the Eco Organic in overall edge support.
Do I get hot at night?
If so, Avocado beds may not help you stay cool during sleep. The two we tested didn’t earn good scores in our cooling gun test. The Avocado Green earned only so-so marks, while the Eco Organic received a poor rating. If staying cool is a chief concern, our reviews of the best cooling mattresses may be a helpful next step.
FAQs
What is the lifespan of an Avocado mattress?
Avocado says its mattresses are designed to last 10 to 25 years, depending on the model — that’s longer than the industry standard of seven to 10 years. Due to differences in construction, the company offers a 25-year limited warranty and a 365-night trial period for the Avocado Green, and a 10-year limited warranty and 100-night trial period for the Eco Organic. While these beds are a bit more expensive, these generous warranties could be a good tradeoff.
Can you flip an Avocado mattress?
No, Avocado mattresses are not meant to be flipped. Instead, the company recommends rotating your mattress head-to-toe monthly for the first six months, then every other month after that to ensure even wear. This level of maintenance may be considered unique to this company, though these are company recommendations and not absolute requirements. This may help prevent permanent indentations or compressions from forming in one area.
Do Avocado mattresses sag?
Avocado mattresses can sag over time, though the company says the beds’ natural Dunlop latex, a durable foam made from the sap of rubber trees, and recycled steel coil construction make them more durable than traditional memory foam beds. These mattresses require a rigid foundation with slats no more than a few inches apart. Sag caused by an inadequate foundation or bed frame can void the warranty.
