Netflix Movie Preview: The 20 Best Films Coming in 2025

Stock up on popcorn, this lineup will keep you happily sofa bound through Christmas

This is shaping up to be the biggest movie year yet for Netflix, which has already launched comedies like Kinda Pregnant starring Amy Schumer and the family-friendly charmer Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl since New Year’s Day. But there are more – far more, in fact – dramas, comedies, rom-coms, thrillers and action films planned for the rest of the year. DRAMAS

Jay Kelly

A heartbreaking dramedy from Marriage Story director Noah Baumbach, 55. The plot details remain under wraps, but the cast list is a stunner, including George Clooney, 63, Adam Sandler, 58, and Laura Dern, 58.

RIP

Matt Damon, 54, and Ben Affleck, 52, lead an ensemble cast as Miami cops who discover millions in cash in a derelict stash house. Trust among them begins to fray and a criminal thriller ensues.

Train Dreams

Adapted from Denis Johnson’s 2011 novella of the same name, Joel Edgerton, 50, plays a railroad laborer at the start of the 20th century encountering deep love, demoralizing setbacks, and a rapidly changing American landscape. Felicity Jones, Kerry Condon, and Willam H. Macy, 74, costar.

Frankenstein 

Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro, 60, brings his inimitable vision to Mary Shelley’s classic tale of Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac), who plays God and creates a monster (Jacob Elordi).

The Ballad of a Small Player

This psychological thriller based on Lawrence Osborne’s 2014 novel stars Colin Farrell as a high-stakes gambler laying low in Macau, whose past and debts loom dangerously large. Tilda Swinton, 64, costars.

R&B

From producer Tyler Perry, 55, this is an updated telling of the iconic Biblical love story of Ruth and Boaz. Here, a young woman leaves the Atlanta music scene to care for an elderly widow, finding love and the mother she never had. The ensemble cast includes Phylicia Rashad, 76.

Steve

Cillian Murphy stars in a 24-style film as a headmaster of a last-chance reform school who struggles with his own mental health along with the behaviors of his students.

Straw 

Writer/director Tyler Perry’s thriller stars Taraji P. Henson, 54, in a story of a single mother, struggling against circumstances beyond her control, who gets entangled in a situation she never imagined.

COMEDIES

Nonnas

Stricken by grief after the loss of his mother, Joe (Vince Vaughan, 54) upends his life and opens an Italian restaurant with a group of local grandmothers as the chefs. The nonnas include Susan Sarandon, 78, Lorraine Bracco, 70, Talia Shire, 78, and Brenda Vaccaro, 85.

Happy Gilmore 2

Adam Sandler, 58, returns as the accidental duffer with a massive slapshot swing, reuniting with many cast members from the 1996 original, including Christopher McDonald, 70, Julie Bowen, 55, Dennis Dugan, 78, Allen Covert, 60, and Severance director Ben Stiller, 59.

The Thursday Murder Club

A quartet of retirees – Elizabeth (Helen Mirren, 79), Ron (Pierce Brosnan, 71), Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley, 81) and Joyce (Celia Imrie, 72) – solve cold-case murders for fun instead of playing bridge. But when a crime occurs close to home, they’re called into real action as a crime-solving squad most delightful.

Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Destination Wedding

Madea’s gang is back! And they’re going to the Bahamas for the sudden wedding of the daughter of Brian (Perry) and ex-wife Debra (Taja V. Simpson), to a rapper the girl met on a yacht. Perry reprises his iconic role as the mater hilarious.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery

Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig, 57) returns for his most dangerous case yet in the third installment in Netflix’s hit whodunit ensemble capers.

The Woman in Cabin 10

Based on Ruth Ware’s 2016 bestselling novel about a journalist (Keira Knightley) aboard a luxury yacht who witnesses a passenger being thrown overboard. Her concerns go unheeded, and when she begins her own investigation, things get suddenly dangerous. Guy Pearce, 57, and Hannah Waddingham, 50, costar.

The Life List

After the death of her mother, Alex (Disney vet Sofia Carson) sets off to fulfill her mom’s bucket list. The quest leads her into romance (of course), family secrets, and self-discovery.

Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights) plays an American Type-A biz exec who travels to France to buy up a world-renowned Champagne brand before Christmas. Enter a charming Parisian and ensuing Gallic romance, but ooh la la! He’s the founder’s son.

When American Anna (Sofia Carson again!) fulfills her childhood dreams of going to Oxford University, a dashing local complicates the plot.

A young woman (Emmy nominee Miranda Cosgrove) joins a reality dating show thinking it's in Paris, France, but it's actually in Paris, Texas. She’s working on a way to get eliminated, but suddenly finds herself developing feelings for the bachelor at the center of the show.

ACTION MOVIES

Havoc 

In this action thriller, a world-weary detective (Tom Hardy) goes deep into the criminal underworld to save a politician’s estranged son after a drug deal goes awry. There, he discovers a menacing world of corruption that threatens his entire city.
