A day out on the town for Denzel Washington, 62, included an unexpected stop. It involved an 86-year-old grandma who was waiting for a refrigerator to be delivered — but who received a very different kind of visit.
Washington was trying to find a barbecue restaurant on Chicago’s South Side last weekend when he ran into a group of fans. While chatting, they told him about his biggest superfan, Juanita Hubbard, who lives right across the street. The actor, being the nice guy he is, said he had to meet the woman — known in the neighborhood as Mama Hubbard.
A video of the impromptu meet and greet that was posted on social media showed the surprise introduction and the nearly 10-minute conversation. Some of Hubbard’s two children, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren were also there.
“I’m not gonna let you go,” she told the actor.
Hubbard revealed to the Chicago Sun-Times that she was reading an old horoscope when he pulled up and surprised her. Washington told her he was very familiar with the neighborhood because he had family who lived in the area. He said he remembered playing outside and going to the same restaurant that he was trying to locate earlier when he got sidetracked — and made Hubbard’s day!
