There are plenty of great American traditions that mark the unofficial start of summer over Memorial Day weekend — parades, beach visits, backyard barbecues. Here’s another one to keep in mind: huge mattress sales.

If you and your aging back are in the market to upgrade to a luxury mattress, there may be no better time than Memorial Day weekend to snag one at a considerable discount. Expect savings of 30 to 40 percent off mattresses and deal sweeteners like free delivery or gifts with purchase, like pillows or sheets.

As someone who finds lying down on my pillow-top Beautyrest Black mattress one of the absolute best parts of the day, I consider an investment in a luxury mattress an essential expression of self-care. And the deals available this holiday weekend mean that you may be able to purchase a mattress with high-end features like memory foam or cooling technology that might otherwise be out of reach at regular prices.

Here’s a look at some of the most tempting Memorial Day sales I’ve found on luxury mattresses, based on conversations with shopping experts and checks of retailers’ websites and ads.

If you love a foam mattress

Casper memory foam mattresses fall on the affordable end of luxury – especially this holiday weekend. The pioneer in bed-in-a-box shipping is offering 30 percent off all its mattresses (queens typically run $870-$2,185) through June 4, in its biggest sale of the year. Plus, the brand is offering 10 percent off everything else on its site, including pillows, sheets, bed frames and furniture.

If you and your partner can’t agree

You like a soft mattress, and they want firm? No problem with Sleep Number smart mattresses, which allow you to adjust the settings for each side individually. Take 50 percent off the Sleep Number 360 iLE Limited Edition smart bed (a queen typically costs $5,499) through Memorial Day weekend. The mattress seller is also offering free home delivery if you buy a base and is running a buy-one-get-one sale on its Ultimate Shape Pillows.

If you run hot

The cooling technology in GhostBed mattresses can keep you cool all night, allowing for a more restful sleep. Through Memorial Day, you can take 50 percent off all mattresses on the site, including its patent-pending massage mattress (a queen normally goes for $2,995), with a built-in air-pressure massage feature, and the Legend Bed, designed with Serena Williams for recovery and performance.

If you’re a back or stomach sleeper

The Saatva Classic Luxury Hybrid Innerspring Mattress is on sale through Monday for up to $300 off (a queen is typically $2,095), depending on the size of the bed purchased. Compared to foam, the coils inside traditional innerspring mattresses can distribute weight more evenly and provide additional hip, back and shoulder support. Other mattresses at Saatva are on sale this weekend as well, with discounts ranging from $200 to $500 off.

If you want to go organic

Get 25 percent off any mattress from organic mattress brand Essentia, which boasts that the materials used in its products are nontoxic, ethically sourced, and certified organic. One to check out: Essentia’s new Grateful Eight mattress, a slightly lower-priced product with a medium support feel (a queen typically costs $2,699). Qualifying purchases come with a free set of Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) sheets.
