Billy Welch is a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee and first started to experiment with carving more than 30 years ago. Now he owns Hunting Boy Wood Carving in Robbinsville, North Carolina where he carves masks that represent the seven traditional Cherokee clans - Bird, Deer, Wolf, Blue, Long Hair, Paint, and Wild Potato. He also does beading, weaving, and basket making. Welch hopes to instill a sense of appreciation for these traditional arts by teaching classes at the Robbinsville High School.

Increased interest in the hat sparked the idea for a small collection. Pictured is a hat that is steamed and shaped using classic Navajo traditions.
