Tell Congress to Oppose Any Tax Bill That Would Increase Taxes for Seniors! Take Action Now

I want to start collecting my Social Security benefits when I turn 62 on November 14, 2017. I understand that the first benefit on December will not be paid until January 2018. My question is: Should I apply for it now to start the process or am I supposed to wait until November 14 to apply?

You can apply now (September) to start your benefit with December. Social Security requires that you be age 62 throughout the full month to qualify for benefits. Since you were born on November 14, you are not 62 throughout the whole month of November and December is the first month you qualify. In addition, Social Security pays benefits the month after the month they are due so the payment for December is made in January. The Social Security Administration recommends filing your application for benefits three months before the month you want to start your benefit.
