Wyoming: Honoring a Veteran, Bridging Generations

Virginia: Sisterhood of Service

AARP Virginia hosted a program exploring the long, trailblazing history of women in the U.S. military. From the Revolutionary War to today, women have served—often without recognition or rights. Florida: Saluting Military Neighbors

AARP Jacksonville honors the city’s 4,000+ veterans year-round with events designed to serve and celebrate them. One standout effort: monthly AARP Days at the USS Orleck Naval Museum, where veterans enjoy private tours and connect with local volunteers. The goal? To honor service, spark community, and bring military history to life.

Wyoming: AARP’s Support Brings a Life-Changing Service Dog to a Veteran

For 15 years, Dogs & Tags has helped veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries train life-changing service dogs. Trainer Paula Cooke calls service dogs lifesaving, saying they restore hope and connection.

An AARP-sponsored tour of the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia highlighted the often-overlooked contributions of African American troops during World War II, aligning with AARP’s commitment to supporting veterans and honoring Black History Month. Attendees learned about units like the 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion and the heroism of combat medic Waverly Woodson, who saved as many as 200 lives on Omaha Beach in France despite facing segregation. AARP Virginia Associate State Director Brian Jacks emphasized the importance of these educational events in shedding light on critical but underrepresented aspects of American history.
