    Heart of Vermont (4 to 6 days)

    En español | Start driving up Route 7 in the state’s southwest corner through postcard-pretty towns such as Rutland and Shelburne, with overnights at quaint inns and bed-and-breakfasts. Once you hit Burlington, drive east to catch Route 100 and head south along the Green Mountains. Key stop: The Shelburne Museum for folk art.

    Route 66 (2 weeks or more)

    The full Mother Road experience takes you more than 2,200 miles — from Chicago to Los Angeles, including Missouri, Oklahoma and the Southwest. A highlight is Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, which contains a section of the original road. Key stop: The Midpoint Cafe in Adrian, Texas, for pie.

    Lake Michigan Circle Tour (1 to 2 weeks)

    Start in Ludington, on Lake Michigan’s east coast, following the shoreline north through beach towns, then along the southern edge of the lushly forested Upper Peninsula (UP), and onward. Shortcut: Take the car ferry from Manitowoc, Wis., back to Ludington in western Michigan. Key stop: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

    Pacific Coast Highway (1 week)

    Wind your way between Los Angeles and San Francisco on California’s Route 1 (656 miles), staying in small coastal towns along the way. Highlights include Santa Barbara, a beach packed with bellowing sea elephants, and scenic seaside walks in Morro Bay and Pacifica. Key stop: Limekiln State Park, to hike among the redwoods.

    Drive to Astoria, about 90 miles west of Portland, to begin the 363-mile trip down Route 101, through tiny seaside communities. Charter a boat to go deep-sea fishing, hike in Siuslaw National Forest and enjoy fresh oysters and crab. Key stop: Cannon Beach’s Haystack Rock — a stunning geologic formation.

    South Texas (7 to 10 days)

    Starting in El Paso, cruise east on Interstate 10 toward Big Bend National Park. Spend a few days in the park before heading on to San Antonio for a dose of colonial history (visit the Alamo), then wrap up in Austin, known as the Live Music Capital of the World. Key stop:The Museum of the Big Bend in Alpine.
