How to Turn a Pre-Cruise Stay in Miami into a Mini Vacation

Make the most of your pre- or post-cruise time

There’s plenty to do in Miami before or after your cruise. Consider a trip to Lummus Park, which will provide access to the beach.

My fiancé and I were sitting in San Francisco International Airport waiting to board for our trip to Miami when we heard the dreaded announcement: Your flight has been canceled. Bad news in any case, this time it heralded possible disaster. Our red-eye flight from the West Coast was scheduled to arrive in Miami at 7 a.m. Our first-ever Caribbean cruise would sail without us if we weren’t on the boat by 3 p.m.

Saved by a lucky – and extremely expensive – rebooking, we learned a valuable lesson.

“We recommend that our guests arrive at least one day before the cruise for two reasons,” says Jess Peterson, director of Destination Experience and Itinerary Planning for Windstar Cruises.  “First, it reduces the stress of delayed flights, lost luggage and jetlag. It’s nice to know that you have a buffer if anything goes wrong. Second, embarkation cities are wonderful destinations in their own right. To do those cities justice, I highly recommend arriving a few days beforehand, so you have time to explore.”

Peterson’s sound advice applies to a great number of our fellow passengers who are 50 and over. Half of all cruise passengers are over 50, according to data from the Cruise Lines International Association, and PortMiami reigns as the busiest cruise port in the world. A record 8.2 million passengers embarked from Miami in 2024, a 12.8 percent increase over 2023, and the port set a new record in February with 10 ships docking in one day. A majority of PortMiami’s passengers arrive through Miami International Airport.

And many of those passengers have, like us, learned the value of staying awhile. “Many travelers arrive early or stay after their cruise, giving them time to explore Greater Miami and Miami Beach,” says David Whitaker, president and CEO of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, citing expanded transit, luggage services, and attractions making it easier to get around.

That certainly applies to us. Several trips in, we’ve learned to turn our pre- and post-cruise Miami days into fun mini vacations, making many exciting discoveries during our stays. Here’s how to do the same.

An ideal 24-hour itinerary

For our first pre-cruise visit, we chose to stay in Miami Beach, the long sandy island spit off the coast of the harbor that’s about 25 minutes by car from the cruise port. Eager to stroll the pastel-hued Ocean Drive promenade familiar from a lifetime of postcard-gazing, we based our stay at the centrally located Ritz-Carlton, South Beach. The hotel, which underwent a $90-million refurbishment in 2020, is an icon of both Art Deco and Miami Modern style, as pioneered by its architect, Morris Lapidus.

After a quick cool-down in the hotel’s elevated pool overlooking the sea, we headed for Lummus Park, gateway to the white sand beach, which hosts night markets every Friday during the summer. After photographing the Technicolor-bright lifeguard towers dotting the beach, we rented lounge chairs and a shade umbrella from one of the numerous beachfront stands. After sunset cocktails at the beachfront DiLido bar, we finished our evening at The Joyce, a speakeasy-style hideaway notable for the selection of original art from the collection of founder and art dealer Andre Sakhai. From the menu of creative American bistro fare, we chose caviar latkes, sautéed wild mushrooms, New York strip steak, and fire-roasted madai red snapper, while admiring the original Picasso just above our table.

The next morning, we started our rambles at the appropriately retro Miami Beach Art Deco Welcome Center, which leads daily morning walking tours through the historic district, before leaving for the port.

Just down the street and also designed by Lapidus, Eden Roc Miami Beach is another deco-themed hotel option. It offers a wide variety of accommodations and three different pools.

For another take on an ocean sunset, head for Rooftop Cinema Club in South Beach, where you can watch the sky flame red behind a screen showing high-energy favorites such as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Goodfellas.

Post-cruise, with an entire day free between our required 8 a.m. disembarkation and our 7 p.m. flight, we freed ourselves of our luggage. We parked it at a secure site booked through Bounce, one of a number of efficient luggage storage apps (others include LuggageHero and Stasher) that connect you with convenient, privately run storage facilities with prices ranging from $3.50 to $12 a piece per day.

Heading for Little Havana, we planned to spend our time feasting on the requisite Cubano sandwich and taking in the street life along the main drag, Calle Ocho (sometimes shown on maps as Eighth Street), and possibly peeking into a cigar shop. But that was before we discovered Calle Ocho Murals, a community-run art collective with multiple gallery rooms showcasing local painting and sculpture and a huge backyard lined with murals by artists from around the country and Latin America. After chatting with several artists about the progress of their work, we headed for the airport with a new sense of the city’s vibrant global energy.

Curious to get a sense of the variety of Miami’s distinct neighborhoods, we based our next stay in Wynwood. It’s the epicenter of Miami’s arts district and even closer to the cruise port, about 10 minutes away. Colorful and informal, Moxy Miami Wynwood immerses you in the area’s design-forward ambiance with the plus of a convenience store on-site to pick up any items still needed for your voyage.

Newly opened in May, Wynwood’s Niño Gordo imports the boundary-pushing blend of Asian flavors and Argentine grilling of the Buenos Aires flagship. Seafood is a specialty here, and the scallops, dumplings, and prawn fried rice are standouts. For something homier, Wynwood boasts one of a few outposts of New York’s beloved Joe’s Pizza.

A highlight of that trip was a visit to the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, a 70-room, antique-filled seaside mansion. Located 15 minutes south of Wynwood, it features 10 acres of fountain- and statue-filled Renaissance-style formal gardens where every turn of a path reveals an arbor or shady nook.

Now, with next year’s cruise in the planning, it’s time to pick a new Miami neighborhood to highlight. Coconut Grove? Biscayne Park? Maybe back to Miami Beach to explore the north end of the island? The choice may still be up in the air, but what’s certain is that our days before and after our cruise will only extend the excitement of the trip.
