Caregivers play an essential role in supporting loved ones through aging, illness, and disability — yet they often overlook their own well‑being in the process. Research shows that many caregivers struggle with burnout as a result of not taking time for themselves, which then leads to exhaustion, and even long‑term health risks. Experts emphasize that caregivers must practice self‑care not only for themselves, but also to allow them to keep caring for their loved one to the best of their ability.
AARP has long recognized the growing challenges caregivers face. Nationally, tens of millions of Americans provide unpaid care, and many report chronic stress, sleep issues, and difficulty balancing caregiving with personal responsibilities. AARP and its partners continually advocate for caregiver support, resources, and educational programs designed to reduce stress and empower individuals to care for themselves while caring for others.
Starting March 2nd, AARP Wyoming brought back their popular offering Care for Caregivers series in Cheyenne. This springs series specifically focuses on self-care for caregivers and how they can find peace and time for themselves in their daily lives. It is held Monday evenings through March at the Laramie County Public Library, starting with a complimentary dinner at 5:30 p.m. for participants, followed by presentations from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., each covering a different aspect of caregiver well‑being. The first session was a laugh a minute with local comedian and cognitive behavioral specialist and the second session we dove into the intricacies of caregiver burn out and how caregivers can reframe how they think about taking time for themselves. This year we are recording presentations for those who may not be able to join us in person or even those who would like to see them again. The recordings will be posted at www.aarp.org/wyondemand.
This is the fourth time the series has been offered in Cheyenne. Developed originally by AARP Wyoming’s Sheridan Community Action Team, it continues to grow because caregivers value the practical guidance, supportive environment, and the reminder that they, too, deserve care. As series director Emilie Quinlivan notes, “We encourage you to take time just for you,” reflecting the program’s core mission to help caregivers build resilience and prevent burnout.
