Scam Alert: "Traffic Violation" Scam Texts on the Rise

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is warning consumers to be on the lookout for scam texts claiming you have unpaid traffic violation tickets and threatening that this is the "final notice".

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is warning consumers to be on the lookout for scam texts claiming you have unpaid traffic violation tickets and threatening that this is the "final notice".

These phishing texts are designed to look similar to legitimate WisDOT communications and may include a link to pay "fees" along with a deadline to do so before more serious action is taken.

If you get one of these texts:

  • Do not click on the links or engage with the sender
  • Do not provide any personal or financial information
  • Delete the message
  • Report the message

You can sign up for alerts from the DMV to receive account activity alerts and renewal reminders by subscribing to Wisconsin DMV’s eNotify. Like most bank accounts, you will receive confirmation of transactions on your account which alerts you to any fraudulent activities. Sign up for eNotify here: wisconsindmv.gov/enotify.

If you or someone you know is the victim of a scam, you can contact the AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline at 877-908-3360 or sign up for a free, confidential support group session at www.aarp.org/fraudsupport.
