Whether you drive, walk, bike, use a mobility device, or take transit, feeling safe getting around matters – especially as we age. That’s why AARP Wisconsin is inviting residents age 50-plus and AARP members in the Greater La Crosse area to share their experiences and ideas as part of a new Regional Transportation Safety Action Plan.

The City of La Crosse and the La Crosse Area Planning Committee (LAPC) are working with regional partners to create a comprehensive plan focused on reducing crashes and improving safety for everyone who uses our streets. This effort looks at safety challenges and opportunities for all modes of travel and will guide future transportation projects, programs, and policies across the region.

Why Your Voice Matters

You know your community best. Maybe there’s an intersection you avoid, a crossing that feels unsafe, or a route that’s difficult to navigate without a car. Input from older adults is especially important—because safe, accessible streets support independence, health, and the ability to stay connected to the places and people we rely on.

Community feedback will help the planning team:

  • Understand local safety concerns and problem areas
  • Identify and prioritize safety projects and policy recommendations
  • Develop an action plan that improves safety for people of all ages and abilities

Two Easy Ways to Participate

1. Take the Online Survey (by March 31)

Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts through a brief online survey. You can even drop a pin on a map to highlight specific locations where safety improvements are needed.

2. Attend an In-Person Presentation

Prefer to learn more and share your thoughts in person? Join the project team during Monday Mornings at Main at the La Crosse Public Library on Monday, March 2. This presentation will provide an overview of the Transportation Safety Action Plan and explain how public input will be used to shape next steps.

Planning Today for a Safer Tomorrow

Safer streets don’t happen by accident—they’re built through thoughtful planning and community involvement. By sharing your experiences, you can help ensure that the Greater La Crosse region is a place where people can travel safely and confidently at every stage of life.

We hope you’ll take a few minutes to make your voice heard and help create better, safer streets for all.
