AARP-VI Urges Virgin Islanders to Get Prepared and Stay Prepared this Hurricane Season
Español | We’re almost one month into the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) has forecasted what could be its seventh consecutive above-average hurricane season. AARP-Virgin Islands is working very hard to keep the territory – especially its 50+ community – informed about preparing for the current hurricane season and other disasters.
We thank you for joining us on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, for Conversations with AARP-VI. Daryl Jaschen, the Director of the Virgin Islands Territory of Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA), discussed this year’s hurricane season and how we as a community can do our part in disaster preparedness.

Being prepared can help families mitigate the potential impacts of storm season. Now is the time to get a plan together before the impending threat of a storm event. If you haven’t created an emergency preparation plan yet, here are a few resources to get you started:
- Sign up for Alert VI, VITEMA’s mass notification system, to receive up-to-the-second emergency alerts.
- Ensure that your emergency kit is always stocked and updated. Are your batteries fresh? Do you have enough water? VITEMA has a printable checklist that you can download for guidance.
- Register for disaster assistance, along with Ready.gov and Listo.gov (en español) for preparedness information before forecasted hurricane events.
- Download the American Red Cross’ free emergency plan and app to help you stay informed and possible volunteer opportunities.
- Go to FEMA.gov for all federal assistance and other emergency management information.
