AARP Utah celebrated the 2025 Volunteer Recognition & Andrus Award Ceremony this year at the Viridian Event Center in West Jordan. The event honored the extraordinary volunteers we have in our community, and the amazing things they achieve.

The event also announced the recipient of the 2025 Andrus Award named in honor of AARP’s founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus. The Andrus Award celebrates and honors those who make a difference in the lives of others, and it is the most prestigious and visible award AARP presents each year.

This year's recipient is Mareli Furtado, a cherished volunteer at the Riverdale Senior Center, known for her vibrant personality and invaluable contributions. As the weekly Bingo caller, she brings joy, laughter, and connection to everyone who attends.
Beyond Bingo, Mareli serves as the center’s go-to Computer and Cellphone Specialist, offering patient, one-on-one support to seniors navigating the digital world.

Her dedication helps seniors safely connect with loved ones online and complete essential tasks like bill payments and online safety courses. Mareli’s tech guidance has empowered many to feel confident in the digital world that once felt intimidating.
Her compassion, knowledge, and willingness to go above and beyond—including making house calls—have deeply enriched the lives of those she serves. Mareli’s presence fosters dignity, connection, and a sense of belonging. Her supervisor says her work is a beautiful example of how one person can make a lasting difference.
