El Paso joins the AARP Age-Friendly Network
El Paso has officially joined the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities—an affiliate of the World Health Organization’s Global Network—marking a major milestone in the city’s commitment to create a more inclusive, accessible, and livable community for residents of all ages.

With more than one-third of El Paso’s population aged 50+, and a rich bicultural identity where 81% of older adults identify as Hispanic/Latino, the city is embracing a future that reflects its diversity and values.

A Press Conference That Set the Tone
The announcement came during a well-attended press conference at the Hilos de Plata Senior Center, where Mayor Renard Johnson underscored the importance of this initiative. The Mayor spoke passionately about El Paso’s vision for a city where older adults can thrive without barriers—highlighting priorities like safe transportation, affordable housing, and opportunities for civic engagement.
He was joined by AARP Texas Director Lisa Rodriguez, AARP El Paso Associate State Director Liliana Mireles, and AARP Texas Executive Council Member Dorothy “Sissy” Byrd, who all delivered remarks. Community partners and AARP volunteers were present to show their support. Stories were shared about older residents who want to stay active and connected, and how this Age-Friendly initiative can help make that possible.

Why This Matters
By joining the Age-Friendly Network, El Paso becomes part of a growing movement of Texas cities preparing for the rapid aging of the U.S. population. Austin, Houston, San Antonio, and Brownsville are already onboard working to build a city that works for people of all ages and abilities.
