As rents rise and affordable housing becomes increasingly scarce, seniors with fixed or limited incomes are especially vulnerable. Many are just one unexpected medical bill, rent increase, or job loss away from losing their homes.

The problem is not just a lack of shelter beds—it’s a systemic shortage of long-term affordable housing, particularly for those with extremely low incomes. In many regions, tens of thousands of housing units would need to be built to meet demand, with a large percentage designated as affordable for low-income seniors.
Some communities have begun to respond. Programs like medical respite centers and transitional housing initiatives offer safe places for unhoused seniors to recover and reconnect with support systems.

While the issue requires systemic change, individuals can take steps to reduce their personal risk:
