AARP Seeks More Funding Needed for In-Home Care

As New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) prepares to release her budget this month, AARP is pushing for an $83 million boost in funding for programs that serve older residents who need help with daily activities, such as cooking or bathing.

The director of the state's aging office said at a 2024 hearing that the agency had about 18,500 outstanding requests for home- and community-based services. AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel has noted that initiatives like the Expanded In-home Services for the Elderly Program help older New Yorkers age in place and avoid institutional care.
