Lt. Joan Martinez is the newest recipient of the AARP New York Andrus Award for Community Service, the state’s most prestigious volunteer honor. An unpaid civilian volunteer with the New York City Police Department’s 24th precinct in the Upper West Side, Martinez patrols her neighborhood, ensuring residents and business owners feel safe.

As an auxiliary police lieutenant, she wears a uniform and bulletproof vest, carries a baton and radio, and helps de-escalate conflicts—calling for regular police support when needed. Her presence alone reassures shop owners closing for the night and people walking home after work.

The 2025 award was presented on Thursday, Nov. 20. Beth Finkel, AARP New York’s State Director, praised Martinez:

“This award symbolizes how we can work together to make New York City a better place. Joan embodies AARP’s spirit of volunteerism, contributing directly to her community by keeping her neighbors safe.”

Martinez, a graduate of Brooklyn College and Adelphi University, is also an instructor with the New York City Department of Education, demonstrating her commitment to education and community service.

The Andrus Award honors the legacy of AARP’s founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, who believed in the power of individuals to improve their lives and lead social change. Martinez exemplifies that vision, showing how dedication, courage, and compassion can make a meaningful impact on a community.
