As part of Fraud Prevention Month, AARP New Mexico is conducting three community shred events, Saturday, April 25, in Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Las Cruces.
April 25 is also Drug Take Back Day, a program that allows people to safely dispose of their expired prescription medications. AARP New Mexico will partner with the New Mexico Department of Justice at the shred event in Santa Fe so people can have their documents shredded and dispose of their medications at the same time.
“The AARP Shred Day and DEA Drug Take Back Day events continue to play a vital role in protecting our communities. The NMDOJ is proud to again partner with AARP to continue safely securing the disposal of sensitive documents and unwanted prescription medications. At our most recent event, we collected more than 160 pounds of unused medications and we look forward to continuing this positive impact in our communities,” said New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez.
AARP New Mexico State Director, Joseph Roybal-Sanchez, said, “We are very happy to continue our partnership with the NMDOJ and offer Santa Fe area residents an easy and safe way to dispose of unwanted medications. It is our hope that eventually we can expand this partnership to shred events in other communities.”
The shred events are among other programs the state office is conducting throughout April and May to help people spot fraud and scams and avoid them. Learn more at www.aarp.org/nm.
“When it comes to outsmarting the criminals who perpetrate scams, you can never be too careful or know too much,” said Gary Williams, AARP New Mexico Associate State Director for Community Outreach. “The more steps you take toward safeguarding your personal information, whether written or verbal, the better off you will be.”
“Shredding documents that contain personal information of any kind that can identify you, whether an address and phone number, or financial information like credit card numbers or bank accounts, is vital to keeping your information safe,” Williams said.
“So we encourage people to take advantage of our shred events to get that done for free as shredding information on your own can get quite costly or be time consuming,” he said.
The Santa Fe event will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for both document shredding and prescription drug disposal. It will be at the Santa Fe Place Mall, on the south side, near the Regal Movie Theater parking lot. Please follow the signs and traffic cones.
