NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ, January 20, 2026 - AARP New Jersey congratulates Governor Mikie Sherrill on her inauguration and appreciates that her speech underscored a steadfast commitment to making New Jersey more affordable. We are encouraged by her focus on lowering property taxes, freezing utility rates, and supporting older residents across the Garden State.

Affordability remains a critical concern for New Jersey’s older adults and their loved ones. According to a 2025 AARP New Jersey poll, a staggering 95% of respondents say making property taxes more affordable is a very or somewhat important issue. Nearly half have considered leaving New Jersey, with 80% of those citing property taxes as a factor. Additionally, 93% say the affordability of utilities is a very or somewhat important issue, and 40% of family caregivers report financial setbacks. By prioritizing these issues, Governor Sherrill demonstrates a clear understanding of what matters most to our community.

AARP New Jersey stands ready to work with Governor Sherrill and her administration to advance solutions that make life more affordable for older adults in the Garden State. Together, we can build a stronger New Jersey where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
