Family Caregiving in Nevada: Where to Start

Most people do not wake up one morning and decide to become a caregiver. It happens gradually, or it happens overnight. You start driving your mother to appointments. You take over the bills for a spouse or a relative. A loved one moves into your spare room, or you begin spending more time in theirs.

Many Nevadans doing this work would never call themselves caregivers. They would say they are helping out. But if you are helping manage someone else's medications, meals, money or medical care, you are a caregiver, and there is help available to you.

About 560,000 Nevadans provide unpaid care to an adult family member or other loved one, contributing an estimated 490 million hours of care each year. That care would be worth approximately $10.6 billion if it were paid for in the marketplace, according to AARP Public Policy Institute's 2026 Valuing the Invaluable report.

Caregiving touches families and communities across the state. It is not a niche experience. It is part of everyday life for hundreds of thousands of Nevada families.

Where to Start

If you are new to this, or if you have been doing it a while and feel underwater, a few things help more than others.

Get the conversation started early. The hardest conversations are the ones nobody has had yet. Talking about wishes, finances and living arrangements before a crisis is easier than doing it during one.

Put the paperwork in order. Know whether your loved one has an advance directive and whether they have named someone to make health care decisions if they cannot speak for themselves. Know where those documents are. Financial authority is separate, so find out whether anyone is authorized to handle banking and bills.

Ask for specific help. People say “let me know if you need anything” and mean it, but vague offers are hard to accept. Asking someone to pick up a prescription on Thursday is easier for everyone.

Take care of yourself too. Caregiving can affect your health, your finances and your well-being. Looking after yourself is not separate from caregiving. It is what makes continued care possible.
