A recent survey from AARP shows 42% of adults, or 141 million people in the United States, have had money or sensitive information stolen through fraud. Nine in 10 adults now believe fraud can happen to anyone, and their biggest worry about fraud is that it will happen to them.
Most scams begin with three red flags: an unexpected contact, a surge of emotion and a sense of urgency. When you see these signs, take an “active pause.” This gives you time to process what’s happening and can help you avoid fraud. Scams are constantly evolving, and one of the fastest-growing threats involves cryptocurrency kiosks. These machines are becoming more common in everyday places like gas stations and convenience stores. Unfortunately, scammers are increasingly using them as a tool to steal large sums of money.
Another one of the ways you can protect yourself from identity theft and fraud is to shred your sensitive documents. By shredding documents like bank statements, credit card offers and tax records, you can prevent criminals from accessing your personal data and potentially using it to commit fraud.
AARP Michigan is hosting a series of free shred days and educational events on fraud to make safeguarding yourself easier than ever. Join us!
