During Fraud Prevention Month, PROTECT Week Shines a Light on Elder Financial Abuse
Financial exploitation of older adults is one of the fastest-growing and most devastating forms of elder abuse. Research and federal reporting make clear that the problem is worsening:
These losses are often devastating. Once funds are transferred, they are almost never recovered.
That is why AARP Maryland is joining forces with the Maryland Department of Aging, Maryland Department of Human Services, Office of Financial Regulation in the Maryland Department of Labor, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office — along with a coalition of federal, local government, business and consumer groups — participate in PROTECT Week, a statewide awareness and education campaign targeting elder abuse and financial exploitation.
As part of AARP’s National Fraud Prevention Month, AARP Maryland and PROTECT Week partners are hosting free webinars, on-site workshops and shred events to raise awareness about how to spot and combat elder financial abuse.
