At AARP Louisiana, volunteers are the heart of our work. By sharing your time and talents, you help strengthen communities, support people age 50 and older, and create positive change across the state. Whether you enjoy connecting with people face‑to‑face, advocating for important issues, teaching others, or volunteering from home, there’s a role for you.

Community Outreach

Community Outreach volunteers partner with AARP staff to host events, support local initiatives, and share trusted information on issues that matter most to older adults and their families. Opportunities are available for those who enjoy public interaction as well as those who prefer behind‑the‑scenes support.

Community Outreach Roles:

Welcoming and assisting guests at classes and events
Supporting caregiving programs and resource education
Presenting or assisting with healthy living programs
Working with and supporting veterans and their families
Teaching digital skills through Older Adults Technology Services (OATS)
Promoting livable communities, including safer streets and walkable neighborhoods

Advocacy

Advocacy volunteers help give a voice to people age 50+ by advancing policies that improve lives today and for future generations.

Advocacy opportunities include:

Communicating with state or federal lawmakers through emails, calls, and meetings
Providing virtual testimony and participating in advocacy briefings
Writing letters to the editor
Taking part in special advocacy events, including Caregiver Day at the Capitol

No prior advocacy experience is needed—training and support are provided.

Speakers Bureau

If you enjoy speaking and educating others, the AARP Speakers Bureau may be a perfect fit. Trained volunteers deliver engaging presentations on topics important to older adults, including:

Caregiving and caregiver resources
Brain health and healthy aging
Fraud and scam prevention
Emergency preparedness and disaster readiness

Presentations are offered to churches, community organizations, social clubs, and media outlets.

AARP Smart Driver™ Instructors

Smart Driver instructors help drivers age 50+ stay safe, confident, and independent. Volunteers organize and teach classroom courses that share practical driving strategies proven to reduce risk and save lives—benefiting individuals, families, and entire communities.

Livable Communities

Livable Communities volunteers support efforts to make neighborhoods welcoming for people of all ages. Working with AARP staff and community partners, volunteers help promote:

Safe, walkable streets
Age‑friendly housing and transportation
Access to essential services
Opportunities for residents to stay connected and engaged

Office Support

Office support volunteers assist with administrative tasks, greet visitors, help prepare materials, answer phones, and support community events and classes. This role is ideal for those who enjoy organization, teamwork, and helping operations run smoothly.

Virtual Volunteer Opportunities

You can make a difference from the comfort of your home. Virtual opportunities offer flexibility while allowing you to contribute your skills and passion.

Virtual roles include:

Telephone Town Hall Screeners
Assist during live telephone town halls by screening calls
Help ensure discussions stay focused and productive
Training provided; computer and phone access required

Tech‑Savvy Volunteers

Digital Outreach: Support AARP initiatives through social media, email, and online engagement
Content Creation: Contribute writing, graphic design, or video skills for web and promotional materials
