AARP Kansas invites the Topeka community to an engaging and meaningful evening centered on caregiving, resilience, and hope. On Friday, May 29, 2026, individuals and families are encouraged to attend a free screening of Taking Care at the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library.

Part of AARP’s Movies for Grownups® series, Taking Care is a 38-minute film that tells the deeply personal story of actors and filmmakers Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller Rogen as they navigate the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease affecting Lauren’s mother. Through humor, honesty, and compassion, the film highlights the emotional complexities of caregiving while offering a powerful message of resilience and hope.

A Story That Resonates with Caregivers

Millions of Americans provide care for a loved one, often facing difficult decisions and emotional strain. Taking Care brings these experiences to life in a relatable way, illustrating how individuals can find strength and purpose even in the most challenging circumstances. The film also emphasizes the importance of raising awareness and seeking solutions to issues like Alzheimer’s disease that impact so many families.

The film is presented by Hilarity for Charity and PCH Films, with support from organizations including AARP, the BrightFocus Foundation and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.

More Than a Movie: Community Conversation and Resources

Following the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion featuring local professionals with expertise in dementia care, mental health, and support services.

Panelists include:

  • Jessica Clossen, a Certified Dementia Practitioner and founder of Dementia Care Consulting, who helps families navigate the practical and emotional challenges of dementia care.
  • Phelica Glass, a licensed clinical social worker based in Topeka, who emphasizes community education and open conversations around mental health.
  • Chrisy Khatib, Deputy Director for Adult Protective Services for the State of Kansas, who advocates for vulnerable adults and works to address abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

The panel will provide valuable insights, answer questions, and connect attendees to local resources. A short break with light refreshments will also be offered during the evening.
