A Lifetime of Service: Honoring AARP Kansas Volunteer Rick Gibson
May is National Veterans Awareness Month—a time to recognize the courage, sacrifice, and continued service of those who have worn our nation’s uniform. At AARP Kansas, we’re proud to honor volunteer Rick Gibson, whose commitment to service extends far beyond his time in the military.
Rick served in the U.S. Navy from 1963 to 1965 as a Storekeeper Third Class aboard the USS Guadalupe, supporting operations throughout the Western Pacific. He credits his military experience as the start of a lifelong dedication to serving others.
That dedication was recently recognized when Rick joined Kansas Honor Flight #106, traveling with fellow veterans on a three-day trip to Washington, D.C. The all-volunteer program honors veterans by connecting them with the memorials that tell the story of their service.
During the trip, Rick visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, where he witnessed the Changing of the Guard and a moving wreath-laying ceremony. A surprise “Mail Call,” filled with letters from loved ones, made the experience even more meaningful.
For Rick, the trip was both powerful and long overdue. “This is an experience of a lifetime,” he said, reflecting on the gratitude shown throughout the journey.
At AARP Kansas, volunteers like Rick are at the heart of our work—strengthening communities, supporting neighbors, and advocating for older Kansans. This Veterans Awareness Month, his story is a reminder that service doesn’t end—it evolves, inspires, and continues to make a difference every day.
