In 2023, AARP Illinois intervened in two utility rate cases proposed by Peoples Gas and Ameren Electric and the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) sided with us and utility customers across the state! These were the results of our efforts:
Peoples Gas
As a formal intervenor on behalf of Illinois residents 50-plus, AARP Illinois opposed the rate increases that benefited Peoples Gas’ bottom line on the backs of its customers. We are pleased to see that the ICC:
- Adopted AARP Illinois’ recommendation to keep the customer charge at $30.45 per month, rather than increase it to the proposed $45, a decision which will impact countless older adults – and especially those on fixed incomes;
- Disallowed $265 million of spending and ordered the utility to focus on replacing high risk pipe;
- And lowered the profit rate for the company, which reduces the gas rate increase.
Ameren Electric
In response to the Ameren Electric rate increase, the ICC:
- Struck down an unjustifiable rate increase and significantly lowered the company profit margin, saving customers tens of millions of dollars.
As this decision goes into effect, we know that older adults may still struggle to pay their utility bills. AARP Illinois will continue – as it has always done – to fight on behalf of ratepayers who deserve to have their voices prioritized in a rate case decision that will affect their cost of living.
