All women experience menopause as they age, yet for many years there has been limited conversation and inconsistent information about what happens during perimenopause and menopause. As a result, many women have struggled with symptoms without understanding what was happening to their bodies—or knowing that support and treatment options exist.
Medical understanding of perimenopause and menopause has evolved and experts now recognize that symptoms can begin years before menopause, affect women in different ways, and, for many women, be managed with appropriate care.
To help bring clear, up‑to‑date information to women on Oahu, AARP Hawai‘i is offering a free seminar, “Hot Flash! It May Be Menopause,” on Saturday, March 28, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Windward Community College.
To learn more or register, visit events.aarp.org/hot3-28 or call 877‑926‑8300 to reserve a seat. A list of AARP Hawai‘i events is available on the AARP Hawai‘i Facebook page by clicking the Events tab, or at aarp.org/hi.
Women who attend will hear from a gynecologist, psychiatrist, and physical therapist who will explain the range of symptoms associated with perimenopause and menopause, discuss why symptoms are often misunderstood or overlooked, and review current, evidence‑based treatment options. The speakers will also answer questions and help women better understand what is normal, what is treatable, and when to seek support.
“This is a transition that affects millions of women, yet many have not always received clear or consistent information about what to expect,” said Jackie Boland, outreach director for AARP Hawai‘i. “We want to be a wise friend to women by creating a welcoming space where they can come together, hear from trusted experts, and get accurate, practical information about this stage of life.”
